Sorry to hear that, jitterbug. I think that stress is probably the biggest contributor to insomnia. Probably not the only one, but definitely very high on the list. I've been using affirmations and breathing exercizes and have began daily meditation. Maybe it's a placebo thing, but I have been able to fall asleep a bit easier after my middle of the night awakenings. Once I get this under control, I'm going to try and get off or at least taper down on my benzo's. I'm on 10mg valium 3x/day and 1-2 mg ativan as needed during the night – though thankfully I have not needed the ativan much. I usually just tough it out.

Hi Martin and thank you for the welcome as well as the site.

I'm awakening during the nightduet to stress and anxiety according to a psychiatrist as well as a sleep specialist. I have an anxiety disorder which I'm on a pretty hefty dose of antianxiety meds for. Sleep study showed nothing wrong with my breathing. I'm sure that Insomnia Land has plenty of people like me that know how lousy insomnia is, but would be nice to know that I'm not the only one with early wakings due to psychological issues like anxiety/stress/depression. (they all seem to go hand in hand from what I have been told). Of course, I'd love to find some type of remedy or at least some way to get more hours of sleep in each night also! It feels good to be among others like me, though. I can't believe I didn't look for a message board sooner.

I had fair luck with extended release melatonin for a short while. My issue is staying asleep, and it did push me from 2-3 hours to about 5. Was like heaven as long as it lasted. No side effects for me, but already had depression at the time.
