astradaemon✘ Not a client
Good times: landed myself a free-lance writing job that I can do from home
Bad times: everyone at our house has the flu
Good times: it's not H1N1 flu
Bad times: it might be H1Z1…muahahahahahaha

Regardless, at some stage new members will join that have undergone a sleep study so I wanted to get this topic rolling.
I thought it would be a good idea for us to share our sleep study experience. So, if you've been to a sleep clinic please share how it went. Was it even more difficult to sleep? Was it expensive? Were the findings helpful?
Let's make this discussion topic the ultimate sleep clinic resource! Whaddya say?
I was in a sleep study, which is an oxymoron, since I'm an insomniac. It wasn't for my sleep disorder though…I have everything from lucid dreams to night terrors; walk, talk, sing, scream, swear, and move furniture in my sleep; they were trying to map what was happening in my brain while this was going on. Since it was for a reasearch study, I did not have to pay. I was chosen based on an online dream journal I was keeping at the time.
First the insomnia was a road block. The other problem is all the wires they stick on you. I have never in my life been able to sleep on my back. I have to sleep on a side, preferrably my left side…but the wires make side-sleeping very hard. I also couldn't stand being a room that “open.” They wouldn't give me extra blankets, but offered to raise the room temp. However, I need the weight of blankets, not the warmth.
Eventually, I did fall asleep, but when the dreams kicked in, I was ripping wires off, etc. Lots of complications. Disturbing to watch the tapes. But one cool thing was the singing. It was difficult to hear the specific words, but the melodies were beautiful. I didn't know I could sing like that.
Other people who have heard the singing, like family, say the songs are captivating to them.
But that just makes me paranoid about sleeping…LOL. I don't want anyone “eavesdropping.”

I wrote a review for that book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2A2LF2KH4VGLR/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

No problems.
Good times: Took my son to Chuck E. Cheese today.
Bad times: My doctor thinks I need a cancer screening.

I think we have an edge. We won't be caught off-guard in our sleep, and we are used to going long periods without sleep. LOL
astradaemon✘ Not a clientIf I wasn't living with people who fall asleep when their heads hit their pillows, I would handle my insomnia much better. I actually get very jealous at night. LOL
astradaemon✘ Not a clientI sleep better in the fall and winter, when I do get sleep. Any overcast day usually gives me hope. However, the sun keeps me going on the days after sleepless nights.
The only time I never have sleep problems is when I am visiting family in England.
In fact, I generally don't have a problem with jet lag regardless of where I travel to — an insomnia bonus.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientI went through a desperate phase where I would sleep in a different place every night: the floor of my home office, my son's room, the living room, etc.
It would work for one night, but if I didn't keep changing places, I couldn't sleep. Eventually, I caved in and started the meds I'm on now.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientGood times: went 35 years with no cavities.
Bad times: had my first two fillings put in today.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientI write junk like this: http://www.zombiephiles.com/zombie-survival-guide/zombie-survival-stay-home-mom
I have always had a fascination with apocalypse survival, but I was never a Y2K nut.
I've actually written other articles for various websites, but the zombie stuff is more fun.
Before you write me off as insane from lack of sleep, my other hobbies include crocheting, photography and travel.
I have so many interests, I'm never bored, but I'm a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientHave you done much exploring while you've been over there?
astradaemon✘ Not a clientWe have a long list of reasons for homeschooling, but the top three are:
1) we travel a lot
2) my son loves learning 9especially hands-on stuff, ex: gardening)
3) he's an only child, and is growing up too fast as it is LOL
I was an English tutor before I had my son. I worked for Sylvan, and also worked privately.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientI have OCD, and I was in multiple car accidents. In all but two, I was rear-ended at a red light (tailgaters freak me out to this day, and I refuse to drive in big cities). One exception was a police officer who was driving recklessly (already under investigation for some other high-speed accidents), and tore into the front of my car, trying to make a right turn too fast. I was at a red light then too. In physical therapy for six months. The other exception was a roll-over. No one had been drinking or speeding, just fish-tailed on a gravel road…I was a passenger.
Anyway, the OCD leaves me feeling like I can't unwind, let alone sleep. I clean…a LOT. I'm doing laundry right now as a matter of fact…
I hate admitting this, but I take Trazedone (sp?). Usually given as an anti-depressant, but it's strong enough to knock me out for a few hours.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientChronic insomnia. At one point, I couldn't even recognize friends and family, so that's when the hard core medical testing began. My docs think my brain has a dysfunctional sleep/wake cycle.
astradaemon✘ Not a clientDo you get stressed out over the deployments?
My husband is retired military but he works for a company with NAVY contracts so he is away a lot. (He might even be going to Haiti now.) I don't dare take my sleep meds when he is gone because I am afraid I will have an emregency with my 4yr old.
