Thanks Martin!
Not checking the time has been helpful when I wake up at night. Occasionally I want to take a peek out of curiosity to see how much I am sleeping.
I have modified my sleep window where I go to bed when I am sleepy at night sometimes 9pm or 10pm. I will keep the end of my sleep window the same no matter how my night is. I do wake up before the end of the sleep window and either stay in bed or get out. Then I will hear the alarm go off at 5am.
I know I am on the right track and want to be flexible, like I was before insomnia.
GenieBGenieB✓ ClientYes, set backs can be difficult. You are in a place where you can accept them when they happen. When I have a set back, I tell myself it is normal.
I am so much better with nighttime wakefulness! It is the daytime where I get myself in a struggle. Like you, I am keeping on.
Hope you are well too!
GenieBGenieB✓ ClientHi Luke,
I too feel fatigued and tired after a comfortable night. You have a positive outlook on a difficult situation. After living my day feeling lethargic, some evenings I get a boost of energy. I felt like the boost was my mind letting me know that I can do difficult things.
GenieBGenieB✓ ClientDulce,
Thank you for sharing your experience! Your experience gives me motivation to keep practicing and believe that I will sleep.
You sound like you can see the positive in a situation and focus the things that make your life meaningful.
I too have made shifts in how I view sleep. I no longer get anxious when I wake up at night knowing that it is normal. I even woke up 3-4 times at night before insomnia. I even get sleepy at night!
Congratulations,
GenieBGenieB✓ ClientNoel,
That analogy makes sense to me! I too have felt as if I was on an unpleasant trip and had no control of where I was going. I can see how acknowledging and naming the thought can allow me to see that I have a choice to get off that train. I am not stuck!
Thank you for sharing!
GenieBGenieB✓ ClientMartin,
That is an interesting question. If I tell myself that my difficult thoughts and feelings come with being a human being then it is not a struggle. I think 40% of the time the difficult thoughts and feelings are a struggle I am battling.
When I get in a battle I try to do something nice for myself. I will eat a frozen treat or a glass of wine.GenieB✓ ClientLuke,
The first week was so difficult for me! I started with Martin’s 14 day free introduction so I knew a about stimulus control before enrolling in the one -one coaching.
My anxiety got to the point where I called 988. It was a comfort to talk to a person at 2am after days without sleep.
You will learn so much in the program! I am now able to live a life with value even with little sleep. It is difficult but worth it. For me it takes so much practice. I am getting inconspicuous benefits from this program. I do have more empathy and compassion.
Don’t give up! I am on week 6 and still practicing everyday!GenieB✓ ClientHi Arich,
Sounds like you are living a meaningful life with value! I tell myself it takes courage to persist when I am faced with difficult thoughts. I am proud of you to take action and visit a member and pray for each other. You are raising your life condition!
Let’s keep encouraging each other!GenieB✓ ClientForgiveness has been an important value. When I feel like I am not properly working the insomnia program, I feel like a loser. I tell myself I am sorry that I know I am doing the best I can. It may take time and be patient and persistent.
GenieB✓ ClientI figured if I stayed home or went to the movies, I would still feel fatigued. I can say I am tired and fatigued and I went to the movies with friends!
GenieB✓ ClientYes, my spirituality has grown with my Buddhist practice. I can connect with other members to chant together and support each other.
When I feel lonely and tired, I can take action and call to connect with someone.
The values list is very helpful to refer to!GenieB✓ ClientSounds like reading before going to bed is something pleasurable. Do you think you need to read to help you sleep? Is that why you are questioning why you read before going to bed?
GenieB✓ ClientSdzagrean,
You are brave to return to Martin’s course! You can sleep and now you are struggling. I am going to start week 6 and have some concerns since I am still struggling. Like you I live a workable and meaningful life with value even with fatigue. It bothers me that I have fatigue during the day.
There are probably other members who have returned for a refresher course!GenieB✓ ClientHi Lucas,
My nighttime wakefulness has not been a struggle either. Not looking at the time when I wake up at night has helped reduce difficult thoughts. Not knowing the time does not trigger my brain into thinking. Sometimes it is interesting how my mind will wake me up with a thought. I thank my brain for protecting me.
Practicing the AWAKE exercise does help where eventually nighttime thoughts are just thoughts and nothing to fear.
Right now I am dealing with daytime fatigue and difficult thoughts. Will take more practice, patience and kindness.GenieB✓ ClientDulce,
I like the idea of having one value for the week. Sometimes the intent of starting the day with a value does make me look forward to how I can live the best day possible. Even when I feel fatigued when I fulfill my intended value, I am living a meaningful life.
Congrats on your improved sleep! How encouraging for me to hear and look forward to.
The AWAKE exercise has been helpful! When I do have nighttime wakefulness I no longer feel anxious. I know that waking up at night is normal. -
