I also had to take a leap of faith enrolling in the online coaching with Martin. Some of the fear had to do with the frustration I had with medical doctors. Doctors prescribed medications, recommended sleep hygiene, and CBT-i without explaining the concept of why.
This forum has been very supportive and encouraging. Living with insomnia, I felt so alone and broken.
    I now have a community!
I am in week 2 and experiencing night time wakefulness. When I wake up, I thank my brain for protecting me and keeping me safe. Sometimes that is enough.

    Arich,
I do appreciate having this forum to share our victories and frustrations! I am encouraged and comforted and supported.
Right now I feel as if I am not so attached to sleep. My sleep window is 11pm – 5am. I wake up 2-3 times. When I wake up I thank my brain for keeping me safe. If I need to I will practice the AWAKE exercise. Interesting that I wake up maybe 30 mins before my alarm goes off.

Thank you Martin for clarification and a plan!
Now I do not need to think about what to do during night time wakefulness. I will practice AWAKE and get out of bed if wakefulness becomes a struggle.

When I have night time wakefulness, the first thing I do is thank my mind for keeping me safe.
If I feel anxious, then I start the AWAKE exercise.
I wanted to get some guidance on when to get out of bed.
    Thank you Martin

I can definitely remember how I approached sleep before insomnia. I just went to bed when I wanted. Sometimes I wasn’t even sleepy and I slept. I had to put effort in to staying awake when needed.
Now that I have insomnia I do analyze and blame the reason why I have difficulty sleeping.
I have so much empathy for friends and family who are struggling with insomnia. I used to not understand why it was so hard for them.

    Arich,
Thank you for sharing your struggles! I had a few nights with no or little sleep during week 1. It is all so new and I had thoughts that CBT-i will not work for me. Maybe since so many things before this program did not work and I became disappointed and negative.
I love your words…Baby steps! For me it is baby step going 1 step forward and then 3 steps backwards. We have to keep going and not give up and Trust!

I am also weaning off of seroquel. Cutting 50mg tablets in half. I don’t think seroquel is making me feel sleepy since sometimes I nod off before my sleep window. I do find that seroquel does sooth my anxious feelings. helps with performance anxiety.
The AWAKE exercise has been helpful! Especially Acknowledge.

    Welcome Arich!
I believe this is one of the hardest thing I’ve ever done! Just enrolling in the course was a leap of faith. I had to get to a place where I trusted myself to be brave and compassionate.
I just completed week one and found the sleep window to be helpful. Another tool was to not look at the clock when I woke up at night. You will figure out what is helpful. Ask Martin if you are confused and not clear about anything.
The forum has been a place I go to when I feel lonely, sad, frustrated, mad etc…

I do a 15 -20 min wake up meditation in bed after my alarm goes off at 5am. Sets me up for whatever the day brings me.

Finding out that lack of sleep was not going to cause dementia, alzheimers, heart attacks etc. reduced some of my worries.

I am also weaning myself off of seroquel. What has helped me is that I sometimes wait until I am sleepy before I take the seroquel. That way I know that I can feel sleepy without seroquel.
I also feel sleepiness but when I get in bed the sleepiness goes away. So frustrating!
Sometimes I have cycles of waking up, get out of bed to read, feel sleepy then go back to bed and sleepiness is gone.
I’m going to try staying in bed when I wake up and read. I usually do not read in my bed and it is not comfortable to read in my bed.
