Thanks for writing all that, Hamster. It was very helpful. I think my anxiety/sleep problems are not so bad that I need to take Trazadone. It does sound like it IS addictive, in its own way although not so bad as some.

I was interested in your addiction withdrawal and looked up benzodiazepine on the internet and found this information:
There is an excellent website on tranquilizers and tapering off tranquilizers. It is Benzodiazepine Addiction, Withdrawal&Recovery (benzo.org.uk). This site contains taper schedules from the “Ashton Manual”, written by Professor Heather Ashton, a world authority on benzodiazepine post-acute withdrawal.
If you have already gone through the withdrawal, you may not need it but I thought someone else might find it useful.
I have learned that sleeping pills and anti-depressants should only be taken for a short time or intermittantly over a longer period. Mostly they should be avoided as much as possible.
Time should help the grief better than pills in the long run.

Margaret✘ Not a clientHas anyone had any experience with Trazodone? My doctor said it could be used for sleep and would also be an anti-anxiety med. I can recommend it but only in very tiny doses since it seems to make me sleep all the next day if I take the 25 ml recommended dose. I took half of that the next night, same thing. For a week now I have been taking tiny bites off the last 1/4 tablet and am getting excellent results and feel pretty optimistic the next day. Everyone is different so some people might need to take more. I read about this med on the internet and it seems that you have to go off of it gradually even though my physician said it was “not addictive.” Dunno….

Margaret✘ Not a clientHas anyone else tried turning on some background noise? I started using a space heater this winter on low and the pleasant hum is very soothing. I really think this is part of my improvement as far as my insomnia goes. I have a friend who uses an aquarium motor for this purpose.

One thing that has helped in the past is timed release Melatonin although it does not always work. Usually, it helps to lie down with a book on the sofa. I get drowsy and if I don't have any heavy emotional issues then I can go to bed and sleep. Sometimes I get to bed and am suddenly wide awake though. It is great when I have a cold because then I can take Nyquil. Ha!
There is no silver bullet and everyone is different but I hope this helps a bit.

Welcome to the list. You did just fine with your first post, not to worry. I have had sleep problems for about ten years due to a separation from my husband. He is back now and I am sleeping better. I am telling people this so they can be encouraged that sometimes something happens and your sleep problem can improve.
It is still not a perfect situation, for example, last night I was just too tense to fall asleep til around midnight and then woke up around 3 and did not go back to sleep. Most nights I get around 6 hours though and am feeling much better during the day.
It definitely keeps you from functioning at a normal level not to get enough sleep. I sympathize with everyone on the list. Knowing there are other people going through the same thing makes you feel less alone.

I did some research on the internet yesterday. One study is analyzing a piece of Melatonin called UCM765, They hope to get rid of the side effects and keep only the effective part.

Like you I don't think accupuncture does anybody any good, but if you think it works then that is half the problem solved already. Maybe all of the problem depending on the cause of your insomnia.
My case is (was) definitely psychological based on a 10 year separation from my husband. Now that he is back and we have talked seriously and long about a few things I find my insomnia is enormously relieved to the point that I don't feel I should even be on the forum any more…other than to give testimony that for some people the condition can be relieved or even ended depending on the cause.
If the cause is pain related or if you can't find any way to heal the “inner demons” then my story won't help but it may help some of you.

Someone wrote me privately to say that not everyone responds favorably to Melatonin. Everyone is different. In my case, I have definitely felt an improvement. That is all any of us can say is what works for us. I don't think it is bad for a person, but it might not give relief.

Welcome to the group. I don't have much to suggest except that I use Time Release melatonin and it keeps you asleep longer. The brand I use is Natrol but I don't know if it is essential to use that brand. I got it at WalMart.
I can take a nap when I have a bad night so I am pretty fortunate in that regard. Lots of people have schedules which do not allow for this, I know.

Margaret✘ Not a clientI think I can see now why your husband doesn't want you to sit up typing on the computer, Becky. He is probably seriously concerned about you falling again. I can see his point and it does show his concern and his love even though he might not say it as pleasantly as you might wish.
My insomnia is not nearly that bad. If they gave out prizes, you would definitely win first prize.
