Thanks Martin, I think you are right. Before listening to your content, I got very into sleep hygiene and when I changed that very rigid routine it often had the same effect. I am now better at coping with that and my bedtime routine is much more relaxed.
I have tried to approach each night as a beginner, however I still think I have still been falling into the trap of chasing sleep at times and not fully letting go. This has included mindfulness and breathing, watching something relaxing, having a bit of a mantra e.g ‘no struggle’, practicing acknowledging thoughts & feelings. In a way, I had kind of created my own AWAKE exercise, but it kept changing as a combination of things which helped me sleep one night might not work the next. But reading this, I can see it’s actually because I still had the goal of chasing sleep, even if I told myself otherwise which creates the struggle.
Last night I tried AWAKE for the first time as have just reached that stage in the course. I think finishing with ‘it’s ok to just rest’ was helpful and something I have used before but forgotten and I did sleep ok after a period of wakefulness. I’ll keep practicing!
