I think part of the problem is people “identify” with the commonplace and exclude the severity of an actual disorder. Insomnia is a perfect example. Same thing happens if I'm “depressed” or in a low state. “Oh gosh, cheer up, everyone gets blue.” I'll let you fill in the blanks as to what I have to say that or what I restrain myself from saying.

I have found that a nap is necessary for me to be able to function into the afternoon and evening. If I don't get one, my body is too wired to sleep by the time bedtime rolls on me. I could be setting myself up for failure, as well, because with a nap I won't sleep until 12 or 1. Either way, more than 5 hours a night leaves me drained and sluggish and needing two or three naps through the day. :/

Ah…now it makes sense. I was wondering how you were so seemingly highly functional knowing how little sleep you get. I'm glad the naps help, and I'm glad I'm not the only person for whom naps are arguably more important than sleep at night. I felt a little lame admitting that.

I get cycles, right now Im on the sleep every night for about 6 hours and not feel terrible I feel amazing this lasts two weeks or so, then it'll go to I get no sleep for about 18 hours then I'll get 3 hours sleep and this will continue for five months or so, then for the rest of the year I'll get a jumbled mess of no sleep for days, then like six hours like no sleep for 18 hours or so then 1-3 hours etc, then back to the 2 weeks or so of six hours of sleep.

It gets bad for about one week a year where I just get minutes of sleep here and there around an hour in that week

I remember a few weeks ago you were doing pretty poorly. I'm glad you're okay for now, like any cyclical beast, I hope you have more good times than bad times. 🙂

    Thanks Yameris. 🙂

I just finished watching SHERLOCK HOLMES and surprisingly rather enjoyed it. I feel like Guy Ritchie really had his mojo working, even moreso than his other highly stylized work. (Keep in mind, he's not someone I'm a fan of.)

The fight choreography was amazing, even though the quick-cut/maximum effectiveness comabt is the trend these days (BOURNE trilogy, TAKEN), this was outstanding IMO.

    And the art direction, wow.

And if all of that had failed, I firmly believe it is perfectly okay to enjoy any movie with Jude Law or Rachel McAdams.

That's a great Plato quote, I don't think I actually had associated it with him, rather. I wish people would follow that advice. I think people's days would be much more pleasant.

Caers–Def! Distractions are my salvation, though I oddly will have days where I'm perfectly fine, distractions are what allow me to at least do the basic stuff. I don't have kids, but I do have headphones. 🙂

That was very informative, thanks for the info Hedwig.

I've suffered some serious problems from vitamin deficiencies before, so it would not surprise me if something like B12 was also lacking.

Also related: I need to take my multi-vitamin/mineral. I don't think I've taken one in like a month.

Sorry again for starting a topic, then going AWOL. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. People are always amazed at things I've slept through, but I think to insomniacs like us, sleep is such a precious commodity we will literally sleep through anything.

Ideally, I need eight hours at least, even 6 is hard for me to function. But my schedule and reaction to said irregularities vary so much it's a constant dice roll. I was getting by on 6 for weeks…then it wasn't enough. Often, I obviously get much less sleep than 6 or 8.

One of the key things for me is that I NEED a nap during the day. Anyone else like this???

It doesn't matter if I've had zero sleep, six hours, or ten hours, if I don't get a mid-day nap, I usually spend the entire afternoon/evening tossing and turning usually heading into the night where I finally am able to sleep or take something to sleep, etc. Oddly enough, I'd say my “nap” necessity is more important to me than actual sleep at night; if I don't sleep well, I'll tend to nap earlier or longer, and can still function usually early in the day…but it's a much longer, less-functional road if I don't get a nap.

It's interesting to see the variety of people–famous or not, that we (as a community) look up to.

For the longest time my biggest role model was Elizabeth Wurtzel. I think, like a lot of people that read her book(s), I read it and went “Wow, that is me right down to every last miserable detail.” She's best known for writing “Prozac Nation.” Later she wrote a memoir on addiction, which I also have had bouts with here and there. She hasn't written a book in years, but I imagine she writes for some website or blog or newspaper occasionally. I recently she discovered she's now an attorney. In fact, she literally just finished law school and passed the bar a few months ago.

Along with liking her writing style (even Richard Roeper said he had a time making it through her self-induldgence, but praised her skill with words), I like the fact that she has overcome so much (in the mental health realm) along with other random things along the way, nothing special per se, just to see someone with such similar issues continue to overcome them, fail at them, and then overcome them again–which has been the pattern of my life, is inspiring.

That said, I'm a different person now, so I'd have to ponder who I would consider a role model now.

So has anyone seen the new Nightmare on Elm Street yet???

I kind of don't leave the house a lot, and I don't do well with crowds/crowded areas/personal space so I usually rent, instead of theatre–but I've been really looking forward to this remake and would love to hear your thoughts about it.

Also, keep those Iron Man 2 comments coming, either/or (ANOES or IM 2), I might actually drag myself to go see. Jimmy Fallon specifically mentioned the sound being particularly awesome. Also, the variety of jokes in Iron Man 2.

Sorry I was AWOL on the one topic I actually started. It's great seeing all these quotes. I collect them sorta, usually copy-and-paste them, and save them in a text file.

Here's a quote from an interview with a filmmaker, he's talking specifically about his movie, but it's also a general idea/statement.

“…I think that on the deepest level, this is what defines life.  That we have a lot more in common than we're able to percieve.  That we engage in much more cooperation than we're aware of. That there's an order that we don't comprehend, but that is big and beautiful and right, and that also has room for what's difficult or painful or unjust.”
