Silent Night✘ Not a client
Hi Caz,
I don't mean to be rude, and I realise it's hard for small businesses at the moment, but do you have any understanding of how hard it is to be an employee at this time?
I work as a Support Worker for adults with Learing Disabilities, earning £6.45 an hour! I've had two holidays in thirteen years, the last one being six years ago. A few days ago I attended the funeral of one of my people, who sadly unexpectedly passed away after a very short illness. I felt agrieved at having to ask if I still had a job at that distressing time. lay awake at night wondering where I will find the money to decorate my house – which I have to find time to do, replace carpets – which have been laid since my husband and I bought the house eight years ago, re-do the garden, which again we have to do as we can't afford anyone to do it for us, etc. The list is endless! . We have had two holidays in thirteen years!
I don't know you, so I can't say what kind of person you are as a boss or otherwise, but I picked up on the fact that you “try” to be understanding. The word “try” in itself has negative conotations and indicates that you may possibly not be naturally understanding of the people who work WITH you. Could it be that your employees feel a little unheard, mistrusted and taken for granted while you have your sleepless nights surrounding the state of your business on return from sunny Majorca?
Have you thought that instead of hiring a Mr or Ms Motivator, who incidentally, I would find extremely patronising, it would probably be cheaper and nicer to have a team building, relaxing, fun weekend!
Something to even the keel and make your team feel appreciated. After all, how many sleepless nights are they suffering and how is their spreadsheet looking during what is a difficult time for everybody?!
Silent Night✘ Not a clientHaving done some research on this topic, the nearest explanation I can find for this phenomenon seems to be a condition called Autonomous Sensory Meridien Response or “Brain Orgasms”! These can be triggered by external noises or actions, ie. someone writing, monotone auditory sounds or indeed whispering. People report a tingling sensation in the head and feeling sleepy. there are websites on YouTube that play whispered video material for sleep and meditative/relaxation purposes. Could this possibly help some people with their sleep problems? Unfortunately I have been unable to locate any actual recorded CD's containing whispering and to use YouTube would mean having a laptop or computer close to your bedside.
Silent Night✘ Not a clientHi Martin. Possibly. I will try and do some research and will post the evidence if I find any. If, in the meantime, you are able to track any such music, please let me know. Thanks.
Silent Night✘ Not a clientHi Martin. Thanks again. I've been writing since childhood but unfortunately haven't had the time or resources to attempt publication. Ironically, it's been a childhood dream, corny as it sounds. I also write fiction stories and years ago I attended a writers' course, just to prove to myself that I had the ability. I find writing theraputic and love unleashing my imagination. Who knows, I may get there eventually. Watch this space! lol
Silent Night✘ Not a clientHi Martin, thank you for the compliment. No, that's fine. Feel free x
Silent Night✘ Not a clientHi Helen.
Good to meet you. I have suffered with poor sleep most of my life and am going through a period of insomnia following giving up smoking two months ago. On your blog subject of “Do other insomniacs get tired?” I can say personally that I get physically wiped out. I suffer with a muzzy head and headaches, sort of stabbing pains as well. My limbs ache, like I've got the flu and I feel snappy and irratable. In the past I have been prescribed Zopiclone, but this time round they haven't worked. My brain seems to overide the medication and I seem drugged but not sleeping. I recently tried a homeopathic treatment named “Noctura” which helped for a couple of nights. If your insomnia seems worse in winter, could it be a side affect of Seasonal Aquired Defficiency Syndrome? Maybe a light box and Vitamin D supplements may help to balance the chemicals in your brain. Whatever you try, good luck!
Silent Night✘ Not a clientHi ezgeez and martin
My latest episode of insomnia has been ongoing for just over a month now. I thought I was coming out of it a few days ago, when I actually slept for a 5 hour period, then subsequent 4 hour period, but my sleeping seems to have regressed again. I definately feel low and depressed with bouts of tearfullness and aggitation, sometimes when I least expect it…such as at work. I do worry this could develop into full blown depression such as I have experienced in the past. So, I sympathise with you ezgeez and hope you start feeling better soon.

I am a new member and I have registered out of desperation to find a way to ease if not cure this dibilitating condition.
I too have was prescribed zopiclone in the past to help with insomnia as a result of depression at the time. I found that this medication very much causes a kind of drug induced sleep, but you are still aware of the fact that you are not asleep.
Although depression free for over a year now, I have recently quit smoking and have found that this has acted as a trigger for a further bout of insomnia. I have never been a great sleeper anyway. I have tried a homeopathic sleeping tablet called “Noctura” which seemed to help slightly initially, however, now seems not to be as affective. Good luck with your quest.
