Believe me Lisajayne, you are not alone in this. Melatonin is a natural substance made by the body that is secreted by the body when it starts getting dark to tell the body that it is time to go to sleep. So while it may help you fall asleep, it is not a sleeping pill. When sold in stores, it is synthetically made. I’m not sure where you live. If you live in the United States, it is an Over the Counter supplement. If you live in some countries in Europe, I heard you need a prescription for it. You can Google it and there will be a ton of information on it. I wish you luck in your quest for sleep.
I am scared to death myself of getting addicted to these meds, especially benzos. However, I was taking one .25mg Xanax a week just to make sure I had one good night of sleep a week. Unfortunately, I think it quit working but again, I don’t want to increase the dose and risk going down that road. I pretty much now have to rely on melatonin and I don’t think I could sleep without it. Besides, I think Xanax is known for preventing a deep sleep so not sure how much it was helping me anyway. I also take low dose doxepin every now and then to help me get back to sleep when I wake up. It does good in that regard but I suspect it will stop working soon like some other meds have done for me.
