Wow, I had forgotten about that one! I'm a homebrewer so anytime I see someone drink a liquid (it's not beer) like that, I feel for them. What a waste!!

Wow! I had a friend who brewed own occasionally. Hope you don't have family in the riot areas. The stuff that is taking place on our planet will keep anyone awake at night!

I've actually written about hops on the blog before. This may help: http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/hops-are-the-insomnia-cure-youve-been-hoping-for/

Your post did reignite my curiosity about this subject though, so after a bit more research I wrote another blog post about it (and shared your experiment). Of course, you remain anonymous: http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/hops-insomnia-and-an-experiment/

Personally, I'd rather drink a proper beer (ie not Bud/Millers/Coors) than eat hops in pellet form!

Let me guess, you're talking about “Natural Light”, correct? Ha! ha!

I agree that often times people can be extremely insensitive. For example I was talking with someone over the phone last night who said that he would blow his brains out if he was going through what I face every night. Granted that he may have been speaking in generalities, but apparently he has never had to experience such a traumatic condition or he would have been more considerate in his choice of words.

    Yes. Yes.

My parents were the ones yelling. They're dead now.

An acquaintance with whom I have limited contact now – partly for this reason- was insensitive to it. Sometimes I get up in these people's faces (after the long suffering insensitivity) and tell them where to get off. I don't know how much good this does for all of us. I feel like we are all interconnected and I believe in karma. However, I get really impatient with the ignorance ….

My son watched a dvd titled “make your own drugs”. It was different remedies for ailments. Not at all what he was hoping for! 😆 But he brought it to me because there was a guy in England who discovered that hops, used for making beer and ale, can help with insomnia. Back in the day when they were picked by hand there was actually this thing called “hop pickers syndrome” because the pickers were often found asleep under a tree! So this guy did an experiment with 2 insomniacs, filmed them on a typical sleepless night, then again with hops in their pillows. Voila, slept wonderfully.

Okay, so I am willing to try anything. But I am not in England and hops are not abundant in Ontario, except at Brew Your Own establishments. So there I went. They have hops in pellet form and about 15 different varieties. The staff was wonderful. Took me to the back refrigerated room and brought out sample trays for me to sniff and decide which one. I went for the strongest smelling one. None of them smelt very nice, but I thought stronger would be more potent.

I made a little sachet and held it near my nose for 2 hours. Nothing except stink. Next time I tried crushing the pellets, maybe that would release what I needed. Nada. Ah well nothing ventured nothing gained. Anyone else ever tried this? Any success? Man, the things we will do to sleep! 🙂

I have tried Brain Wave Cds, Valerian root, an herbal mix with poppies (not opium poppies) that you can get in the states, lavender oil, milk and sugar – simple carbs, antihistamines, and wine. I am not suggesting anyone try wine because they say it interferes with REM sleep. I have not mixed over the counter meds with wine. Wine will interfere with REM sleep, but I have read that beer and hard liquor will increase your cortisol levels. Cortisol levels influence your circadian rhythms.

    I got this from Medlineplus.gov:

“In normal people, cortisol levels are very low at bedtime and at their highest just after waking. This pattern will change if a person works irregular shifts (such as the night shift) and sleeps at different times of the day.”

Go to Medlineplus.gov if you want more info – authoritative info . I think cortisol plays a huge part in my insomnia. When I am under stress, and I know I am producing more cortisol at all times and I can't get to sleep even though I am exhausted. I have this exhausted frenzy of tossing and turning.

I actually saw a TV show about couples looking for houses. Or maybe this was an article I read. A lot of people wanted an extra room, so when the other person had to toss and turn, they had their own little space in which to go crazy.

I hate people who tell me, “You need to get on a regular schedule! You need to get your ass out of bed! You need to get your ass in bed!” I've had that. I think there are people who are insensitive because they just want to be insensitive.

I finally caved in and took 2 Ativan last night, or rather this morning. I woke up at 4PM.

My heart goes out to you guys. The longest I have been unable to get to sleep is 48 hours. For the past 2 days, I have not had any ativan and I can't get to sleep. I hate it.

I have noticed that over the counter sleep meds like antihistamines lose their affect after awhile. Your system adjusts and you have to take more. I have a friend 20 years my junior who will take 25 over the counter sleeping pills and wash them down with a beer or 2. Sometimes, I worry he won't wake up.

My neighbor, an older gentleman, who also has insomnia lives below me. He can hear me at night pacing the floors. I need my privacy when I go crazy.

Seems an appropriate morning to introduce myself, as I only slept 4 hours last night, despite being ridiculously tired.

I'm Remy, from New Zealand. I have severe insomnia, medicated with quetiapine, clonazepam and melatonin. I haven't slept naturally for five years, and have been through sleep-dep psychosis.

I'm 22, like sports and comic books, and enjoy writing weird stories.

Hey Rem, I just got here today as well. I wish I could sleep in a field of poppies. Sometimes I read graphic novels.

    Thank you.

Yes, I have sought out medical advice.

Ativan works very well for me. Doctors say it changes the sleep architecture. I like it better than regular sleeping pills. I have attached a picture of my cat, Ice Cream Kitty.

Welcome! I wish I knew what my insomnia-type issue was but I am refusing to get a sleep study done. I'd just be laying there all hooked up to wires and not be able to get to sleep. I hate not being able to get to sleep. Maybe I'm just nuts though. lol

I hope you find good information here, I know I have. Good to have you with us!

    Brittany

Thanks. I looked up my disorder on the internet under insomnia. I think Medlineplus.gov is a good place to go.
