I think anyone that's a parent will find it impossible to declare that to be a life changing experience!

Wow, Lindsay – that must have been a shock. How did you react to the news? Did you reply? Was your Dad alive to speak to about the letter (and the story it contained)? My real Dad left when I was about 2 years old. Never heard from him again, apart from in 2008 when he sent me a message on a site similar to Facebook in the UK. To this day, I haven't responded. Like you, I wonder if I have any other siblings out there!

emmaree – I would love to visit Singapore; you are quite the world citizen, aren't ya?!

Well, it was funny actually, because my husband called me at work to tell me I'd gotten a letter from international postage. He thouhgt it was some fantastical lover I'd met in our time there. lol

It was very strange, to say the least. I did email him, and we've been in contact ever since. I felt bad, initially, because he had this vision of our dad as a strapping caregiver, and one who was a hero even though he'd had to leave Thomas behind. Thomas blamed his mother for not wanting to travel back with him. My sister and I (she's 13 yrs my senior and knew dad more than I did) had to break it to him gently that dad was an alcoholic, and also never managed to hold a real job after he left when I was 2. I only met him once. We've accepted Thomas as our family member, and though he wants to get DNA testing to prove it we've discouraged him. Our family is not exactly rolling in money, so the only thing for him to gain is family. All in all, it's been a good experience, and also enlightening. Dad never told anyone, including Grandma Poe. That was awkward. lol

Do you think you'll ever respond to his message?

Oh, that's a terrible loss, Frankie. I'm so sorry. *hugs* I hope it can be a condolence to you that you made such a difference to that little guy.

Life changing events…Let's see. My children's births were probably the most significant. 4:37 p.m. Feb 15th and 1:37 a.m. June 2nd were the most precious moments of my lifetime.

In 2007, I was contacted via letter by a man named Thomas in Germany. As it turns out, when my late father was stationed over there he had an affair with a German girl and Thomas was born of it. Never did I think I'd gain siblings this late in life, and my uncle seems to think there may be another one wandering around Waxahachie, TX, so he's doing some digging. It makes me wonder how many half brothers I may have in this world. lol

Sounds stressful to me! I can imagine that kids certainly hamper Valentine's Day celebrations – even more so when there is a birthday to contend with as well!

It's alright, really. Our anniversary is at the beginning of the month, so typically we shuttle V-day romance anyway. 🙂

It's my daughter's birthday on the 15th so my Valentine's Day is typically spent with kids her age trying to keep everyone happy. I think this year she can bring three friends and we'll go to the movies. I'm too brain dead to plan a huge event. lol

I like a little of everything, with Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry, Aerosmith, Duffy, and The Ting Tings ranking among my faves. Rock is my fave genre, but I can listen to pretty much anything without cringing.

Never seen anything huge, but I do see a cat now and then; usually it sneaks under my bed or jumps off a couch, and it's always when both of mine are in clear view. Once, I would have sworn a man was behind me in my kitchen when my kids were in bed and the husband was gone. I went swinging with a damn butcher's knife and no one was there. My fridge has a nice scratch now, though.

divine comedy you mean? Inferno(Dante) was bloody epic.

As a whole the Divine Comedy was amazing.

Yes, I did indeed mean Divine Comedy. My brain is out of the loop this evening.

I read 1984 when I was 11, and the complete works of Shakespeare by 13, I just helped my girlfriend on her 1984 exam, I helped her via webcam chat.

I also enjoyed Journey to the center of the earth by Jules Verne as well as 20,000 leagues as I said before.

Nice! I never got around to 1984 until now, unfortunately. I was more into horror and mythology as a kid. Read Dracula at 8, much to my Mom's dislike, and I absorbed everything I could about Greek mythology between 9 and 14.

Recently dug up my copy of Dante's Inferno, I think that'll be a good one to finish this week. 😀 I love reading!

Oh, I adored The Kite Runner! So sad.

I have read all the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and they were pretty good if you're into the vampire/supernatural/odd kind of character thing. The show does not do the books any justice.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini was excellent, too.

And Child 44, (can't remember the author offhand), was one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time. I just got 1984, and I love any classics, with Shakespeare being my favorite. I also just finished Precious, an excerpt from Push, and it was magnificent though hard to stomach sometimes.

An interesting topic, Franky. I think most of us reading this would assume that sleeping with a loved one would allow us to sleep better. I've heard the opposite from some people, though – would be interesting to hear if anyone here actually finds they sleep worse when someone else is in bed with them.

Completely turning this on its head – I wonder how difficult it is for non-insomnia sufferers to try to sleep alongside an insomnia sufferer who might be tossing and turning all night?

Funny you should mention that. My husband gets annoyed when I lay there awake because I tend to twitch, like shaking a foot. More than once I have been “accidentally” elbowed to knock it off.

For the most part, yes. When Brandon has a really bad day, his PTSD rears its ugly head a little, so he'll toss and turn all night. And he steals the covers. And he's a bed hog.

But, my God, when he's home and I know he's there it's like ten thousand pounds off my shoulders.
