Counseling all the way. Trust me, sleeping pills do not help. You’ll gain tolerance, end up dependent on them, and then they will stop working. Once hooked you’ll have to face withdrawals on top of the initial insomnia which is a double whammy. I was able to get off sleeping pills (Zopiclone; every night for 9 years) in May after a bout with insomnia.
MelH89✘ Not a clientLorazapam as in Ativan?
MelH89✘ Not a clientNo worries. I had that last night because I was worrying about work. Just challenging those thoughts and relax before bed.

Each time I struggle it gets easier to beat because I recognize that my thoughts are causing this. The trick is to keep living your normal lifestyle. For me, when I feel anxious or a bit depressed, I have sleep issues, or if I’m off work and not tiring myself out (lying around and sleeping in). You need to understand that this WILL get better. CBT-I does help. I’ve made sooo much progress just by listening to Martin’s podcasts. I have never taken his course but I might in the future. For me, I’m so used to being on the go that I go a little stir crazy when there’s nothing to do. Talking to a psychologist helps as well but I highly recommend CBT-I.
MelH89✘ Not a clientYes, it can. I too have had my anxious thoughts interrupt my sleep. It does get better and go away. You just need to understand that anxiety is the problem, not insomnia. I was able to get off sleeping pills after 9 years in March because I gained confidence and stopped worrying. Basically you just grow tired of being anxious and realize that you have the power to make it go away. I’m currently going through some sleep disturbances but that’s because I’m on break and not working. With the pandemic there’s not much to do. When I’m feeling down, I tend to have issues sleeping. This too shall pass. Treat every night differently. Just because you had a bad night or a few bad nights doesn’t mean tonight will be bad. I strongly recommend CBT-I and taking to a psychologist. I was able to get better and I never did complete Martin’s CBT-I course. I think I will one day. You are not alone.
MelH89✘ Not a clientWhat about doing the two week coaching?
MelH89✘ Not a clientIt will work.
MelH89✘ Not a clientI can feel your anxiety radiating off of you. I see myself in your comments. I’ve had a few bouts that were caused by anxiety. Worried I may be going through one now due to worries about messing up my great job. CBT helps. I took sleeping pills for 9 years every night and have been off of them since the middle of May. It’ll pass. Please remember that. When your anxious and stressed, thoughts get sticky. Just take one day at a time and consider doing some therapy. It really helps.
MelH89✘ Not a clientI was a mess 3 weeks ago over my insomnia (caused by anxiety). Once I began therapy (CBT) and weaning off my sleeping pills (I’ve been taking for 9 years every night) the confidence has helped me sleep better. You will sleep again, I promise you. You are not alone.
MelH89✘ Not a clientEdan,
May I ask what you are taking and at what amount? I’ve been on Zopiclone for 9 years and I’m weaning off. Instead of taking it every night I’m doing every other night. Soon I’ll go two nights off and one night on. CBT really has helped.MelH89✘ Not a clientYou are not alone. I’ve been reliant on sleeping pills for 9 years but I’m going to get off of them. We are all here.
MelH89✘ Not a clientThank you for your kind words. If you don’t mind me asking, what sleep meds were you on and how much did you take?
MelH89✘ Not a clientWere your withdrawal symptoms bad? Did you have thoughts of suicide? I honestly don’t just get overwhelmed sometimes.
MelH89✘ Not a clientMine do not work, even if I take more. Have you had that? Have you had many nights on 2-3 hours sleep?
MelH89✘ Not a clientYa but it’s all the time.
