I generally fall asleep when I’m sleepy, without any effort. Are you having issues sleeping?

    Hi James!

What you experienced at 16 yrs old would certainly cause anxiety for most of us and I’m glad to hear that you’ve been able to successfully manage that with training. What is your biggest challenge with sleep, currently?

Welcome to the forum! It can seem like you’re on an island by yourself but I’m hoping you take a few moments to read some of the success stories in the Insomnia Success Stories section of this forum. Sleep doesn’t reward hard work/effort and the more you try to control your sleep, the more your insomnia issue could perpetuate. As you mentioned, trying to control a natural process usually isn’t beneficial so what do you think would happen if you just let sleep occur when it wanted? Prior to the previous 6 months, how much effort did you put into sleeping?

    Hi @YMac,

Great question! Yes, you can shift your sleep window to an earlier time just be mindful of being consistent with your wake up time and only going to be when you’re sleep, but not earlier than the start of your new sleep window.

    Jessica,

Great question! Instead of measuring the time you’re awake or watching the clock in the middle of the night, return to bed when you’re sleepy. With stimulus control, we’re trying to train the brain that being awake in the middle of the night is ok and shouldn’t cause us anxiety or frustration.

    Jessica,

Sleep restriction, one of the main components of CBT-I, is designed to help build a strong sleep drive. A strong sleep drive can lessen awakenings in the middle of the night.

    Hey YMac,

Welcome to the forum! From reading your story, I think you’re on the right track with CBT-I and understanding that you should carry on with life and not allow sleep disruption to change how you live it. As you continue implementing these techniques, please let us know if you have questions.

It’s encouraging to see you’ve been doing well with CBT-I for the previous 6 years – great job! What makes you anxious when you experience these “flare ups”? Since we have less control over our thoughts than we want to realize and knowing that we can’t escape our thoughts, have you tried making room for them and welcoming them as they arrive? When one of those, “what if I can’t sleep tonight…” thoughts arrive, greet it with, “oh hey, thanks for that thought, mind” and let it be. It takes practice and repetition but allowing the thought to exist instead of putting in effort to get rid of it may be more beneficial for you.

    Hope that helps,
    Scott J

Nothing wrong at all, @JTyler. These setbacks can certainly be discouraging but they’re all part of the process. Even though I’ve been “cured” of insomnia for a few years, I still experience an occasional middle-of-the-night awakening but I don’t allow that to frustrate me and know that it doesn’t determine the outcome of tomorrow or the sleep I get the following day. Is it difficult for you to fall back to sleep after waking?

It does sound like you’re in an unsettled time in your life and that can certainly cause some temporary interruptions in your sleep. This sleep disruption won’t really manifest into a long-term result unless you change your thoughts and behaviors towards your sleep. Once you begin having, “what if…” and anxious thoughts and start going to bed before you’re actually sleepy to accommodate the previous nights sleep, taking naps or canceling social events it can lead to a perpetuation of poor sleep.
