ScottMentorYeah, thoughts crave our attention! It’s really not the thoughts or anxiety that’s causing sleep disruption but our struggle with those thoughts. When we try to control or avoid our thoughts we can find ourselves trapped in this endless struggle with them. Since most of our thoughts aren’t helpful and since we can’t control them, what if you created space to allow it to exist for as long as it wants to hang out? Acknowledge the thought when it arrives – “Thank you for that thought, mind!” – and continue engaging in the activity you were doing when it arrived. It may want to hang around a bit after the greeting but responding in that manner creates space between you and the thought. I wonder if attempting to change those negative thoughts with positive ones would be considered control techniques?
Hope that helps,

ScottMentorWelcome to the forum, @Alyna12.
When you have these negative thoughts about sleep, how do you respond to them? What is it about the idea of not being able to fall asleep that seems to generate that anxiety?

ScottMentorWelcome @Mimo155,
Stressful life events, as you’ve experienced, can certainly disrupt our sleep but CBT-I techniques can address the thoughts and behaviors we have toward our sleep. The timeframe to see real benefit is unique to each person but your commitment to the evidence-based techniques could determine how soon you begin to see positive results in your sleep. What might you do to improve the quality of your day so that you’re less concerned about sleep and living the kind of life you want?

ScottMentorHi @Jeck1982,
When we have stressful life experiences that disrupt our sleep, it’s usually restored once that stressor is resolved. However, when we begin to change our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep, it can perpetuate the issue. Have you began exploring the CBT-I techniques – which address those thoughts and behaviors – found on this site?

ScottMentor@Rdl,
If you’re falling asleep outside your bedroom and then become awake when you go to bed, it’s considered conditioned arousal where your mind has associated your bed with an unpleasant experience. If you’re lying in bed awake, what is going through your mind, if anything. Are you relaxed or anxious?
Do you enjoy watching TV, listening to podcasts, crafting, in addition to, reading?

ScottMentorWelcome to the forum, @hdaniel1!
The beauty of CBT-I is you have a set of tools with you to implement when relapses occur. If you used these techniques to improve your sleep in the past, there’s no reason to believe they won’t work in your current situation. Do you feel like the sleep-related anxiety could be a contributing factor now?

Welcome to the forum. Are you fatigued ALL day or just when you wake in the morning? As you go through your day, are you engaged in activities that enrich your life?

ScottMentorHi @Rdl, welcome to the forum!
Did you find the techniques difficult to consistently implement? If you don’t fall asleep right away, what is going through your mind? What’s your current sleep schedule look like – what time do you go to bed, wake up in the am?

ScottMentorThe unpredictable schedule your newborn has could certainly be a contributing factor of your sleep issue, but I suspect, your anxiousness about the sleep disruptions could be perpetuating the issue. When you experience anxiety about your sleep, do you find yourself wanting to avoid or fight those negative thoughts? Since we can’t control our thoughts – when they arrive, the content, when they leave, etc – do you think there might be a better option that would bring more joy to our life than fighting our thoughts?

ScottMentorGood news – we don’t forget how to sleep, just as we don’t forget how to breathe! We just need to determine what is causing your sleep disruptions.
I’d recommend speaking with your physician or GP about reducing your reliance on the sleep medication, if that’s your goal.
How are you able to shut off your mind? When you have those unhelpful thoughts, how do you manage those?
I’m glad you found this site and Martin’s YouTube channel as I think you’ll find a lot of beneficial information on these channels. Have you signed up for the free emails and started exploring CBT-I techniques yet?

ScottMentorHi @Luisa1989, welcome!
What’s your current schedule for sleep – what time do you go to bed and get out of bed to start your day? Do you only go to bed when you’re sleep or do you go to bed at a set time each night? Since sleep-related pills and supplements don’t target the root cause of our insomnia – thoughts and behaviors – it’s no surprise you haven’t experienced long-term success with melatonin.
Our day shouldn’t be determined by how we slept the previous night though. Have you ever had a bad day after achieving great sleep the night before? What if you didn’t sleep at all tonight but woke tomorrow learning that you just won a $10 million lottery – you’ll probably have a good day, right? What activities could you engage in every day that would bring joy to your life instead of dwelling on your sleep issue?

ScottMentorSusan,
I’m glad to hear you’ve signed up for Martin’s emails as they contain a lot of beneficial information and guidance on restoring your sleep. I consider CBT-I to be similar to starting a new exercise routine – when you first start, you’re really questioning if what you’re doing is having any positive impact but as long as you remain consistent in practicing the techniques, you’ll begin to see benefits from them. Let us know if you have questions about the techniques as you explore the content in Martin’s emails and good luck with your move to France!
