    Hi @novatom, welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your story.

    What you’re experiencing isn’t an uncommon theme among those who have insomnia. Typically, insomnia exists because our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep have changed, similar to what your brother describes. When we try to avoid or fight our negative thoughts about our sleep, it usually intensifies the issue. Unfortunately, sleep doesn’t reward our strong efforts and any deliberate attempt to make sleep happen, usually means sleep eludes us. As your doctor shared with you, the more you think about it, the harder sleep becomes.

    It appears like you have some anxious thoughts about your sleep issue though. How do you manage the relationship with those thoughts when they arrive? Those unhelpful thoughts aren’t the problem though, it’s our reaction and struggle with them that fuels the intensity of those thoughts. I wonder if you changed your relationship with them to be welcoming and allowing them to roam around for as long as they’d like instead of fighting/avoiding them if that would be more beneficial for you? See, we have no control over our thoughts but we can control how we react to them. Instead of identifying with those thoughts and getting caught in it’s web of struggle, what if you welcomed it by saying, “Thank you, mind!” and continue engaging in the activity that you were doing when it arrived (or focus on your breath, since you practice meditation)? Don’t believe everything you think because thoughts aren’t truths!

    Hope that helps,
    Scott J

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum! Our thoughts aren’t the problem, it’s the struggle with them that causes continued issues. We try to avoid or fight anxiety because those thoughts don’t feel good but the attention we give them, the more intense those thoughts become. Instead of fighting them when they arrive, what if you changed your relationship with them? When an unhelpful thought arrives, welcome it by saying, “Thanks, mind!” and return what you were doing when it arrived or focus on your breath for a few seconds. Instead of putting up a fight, acknowledge it, allow it to exist for as long as it wants and continue engaging in more meaningful activities.

    Hope that helps,

    @jesssrouji,

    Such a wonderful story and I’m glad to read that your sleep has been restored. How we respond – or don’t – to those anxious thoughts about our sleep is so important in overcoming insomnia, as you’ve experienced. Thanks for sharing your success story in overcoming insomnia!

    Hi,

    The struggle we have with our anxious thoughts can certainly disrupt and diminish our sleep, as you’ve experienced. We can’t control what pops into our mind, but we usually fight those uncomfortable thoughts because they don’t feel good and are unhelpful. Those negative thoughts crave our attention but we CAN control how we respond to them when they arrive though. Instead of that tug-o-war with your thoughts, do you think there might be other activities you could engage in that would be more beneficial and enjoying?

    @Eleanor,

    Welcome to the forum, I think you’ll find the information on this site beneficial in restoring your sleep. Are you currently exploring CBT-I techniques? Stressful life events can certainly disrupt our sleep temporarily, but it’s our reaction to those poor night’s rest that can perpetuate our sleep issue. If those stressors no longer exist, what do you think might be causing your sleep issues now?

    Hi,

    Waking during the night isn’t uncommon, but our reaction to those awakenings can determine if we’re able to fall asleep or lie in bed frustrated. What do you think is different in your 2am waking and the 4am one? When your mind starts ruminating, do you find yourself in a struggle with those unhelpful thoughts?

    Hi @Yanell,

    Welcome to the forum! Are you currently following CBT-I techniques that address our slee-related thoughts and behaviors? The good news is that we don’t forget to sleep, just as we don’t forget how to breathe. Our reaction to a poor night’s sleep could determine if our sleep disruptions persist. When those unhelpful thoughts about your sleep arrive, what’s your reaction to them?

    Hi Jacki,

    In general, any efforts we put in place to generate sleep can be difficult because sleep simply doesn’t reward our effort and, most of the time, perpetuates our sleep issue even more. Sleep meds don’t tackle the root cause of insomnia – our thoughts and behaviors – and usually aren’t a beneficial long-term strategy. It’s not unusual for us to wake in the middle of the night, but our reaction to that awakening could determine if we return to sleep easily or become frustrated, making sleep more difficult. When you wake during the night, are you anxious about falling back to sleep or calm and relaxed?

    Hi @Maina,

    If you’re anxious or frustrated when you wake in the middle of the night, leaving your bed and watching movies/tv is ok. I’d recommend turning on your amber light on your smartphone to reduce the risk of blue light exposure. Typically, watching shows on your TV isn’t a concern because the TV is at a distance that blue light is greatly reduced. However, if you remain relaxed and don’t have anxious thoughts when you wake, you can also remain in bed and get some rest. The concern is when you become anxious and remain in bed, our mind creates a conditioned arousal situation with our bed over time which is the reason it’s recommended you remove yourself from bed.

    Hope that helps,
    Scott J
