    Hi @Carogarci!

    Welcome! Are you implementing a sleep window? Do you feel like you’re going to bed only when you’re sleepy or because it’s a specific time every night? When you have those middle of the night awakenings, are you lying in bed feeling anxious or are you calm and relaxed?

    Hi @Jacki,

    Welcome to the forum! What do you find your mind ruminating about in the evening? When we experience unhelpful thoughts, our tendency is to want to avoid it or struggle with it/them but that usually leads to an endless battle with our thoughts with no positive outcome. How do you manage those negative thoughts when they arrive?

    A sleep journal is based on estimates so you don’t have (and I wouldn’t recommend) to watch the clock and be precise with your time. Feel free to mark the times after you start your day and not in the middle of the night.

    Hey @Rusty!

    Sleep trackers can be tricky to use and if you’re an analytical person like myself, it can really be an anxious tool that you spend a lot of time trying to understand what to do with the data. What happens if it says you slept for 7 hours one night but still feel groggy the next day or it records only 4 hours of sleep and you feel great? When we try to fix our insomnia based on smartwatch readings or advice we find online and it doesn’t work, our anxiety about the issue usually heightens. Instead of monitoring for sleep each day, do you think there are more beneficial activities you could do that would enlighten your day?

    Hello @eloise491,

    Welcome to the forum! What’s your average night’s sleep duration each night? You mentioned implementing CBT-I techniques for years – has this been consistently (daily) or have there been pockets of time where you didn’t use CBT-I? Is there a CBT-I step that you’re having difficult implementing or not seeing expected results? Are you experiencing anxious thoughts about your sleep, especially close to bedtime? Do you spend a majority of your day exploring sleep solutions? Sorry for all the questions, but I’m hoping to narrow down why you might be experiencing sleep disruptions.

    @Becca1528,

    Welcome and congrats on taking a solid step in restoring your sleep with CBT-I techniques!

    Typically, it usually takes longer than a few days for any meaningful improvement in your sleep. I’ve always said that CBT-I is simple to understand but may not be easy to implement, for various reasons. Remember, starting the CBT-I program is like anything else you start for the first time – exercise routine, learning to drive, playing video games, etc – at first, it’s difficult to see that what you’re doing has any benefit but as long as you remain patient and consistently implement the techniques, you’ll see positive results. Be careful trying to force sleep to come because the more we try to make sleep happens, the more sleep eludes you.

    Hope that helps,
    Scott J

    @Milko,

    Thanks for sharing your progress! It’s unfortunate and discouraging to have these setbacks after sleeping so well for consecutive days, but what you’re experiencing isn’t uncommon. Just because you have a tough night of sleep, don’t beat yourself up. You’re taking a huge step forward toward helping yourself by implementing these techniques. I wonder how much of your success during those 5 days was due to you being on holiday, engaged in enjoyable activities during the day and less concerned with trying to “fix” your sleep and trying to avoid your unhelpful thoughts? As long as we continue to try fixing our sleep and our thoughts, the more elusive our sleep becomes.

    CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia) is a set of evidence-based tools that help restore our sleep by addressing our unhelpful thoughts and the behaviors we have toward our sleep. This website is dedicated to these techniques and you can read more about CBT-I here: https://insomniacoach.com/forums/topic/about-controlling-thoughts/

    Exercising 3-4 hours before your bedtime shouldn’t be a hindrance to sleep. Are you possibly going to bed before you’re actually sleepy that may be causing some nighttime awakenings? What is your current bedtime and what time do you get out of bed to start your day? Exercising can be grouped into the sleepy hygiene category where you wouldn’t want to start your fitness routine an hour before bed…the same as you wouldn’t want to drink coffee after a certain time in the day. Could there be another underlying issue besides exercising that might be causing your sleep disruptions?
