It has been 5 years taking sleeping pills and sleep aids; add to that 45 years of using beer to get to sleep. Once I quit drinking I knew that I was doomed to sleep issues the rest of my life. My former M.D. told me that and he was correct. I have tried everything to get to sleep naturally from one on one therapy to sleep studies but everything failed. On them positive side I went from sleeping three hours a night with sleeping pills to six hours a night with my new doctor and adding a second sleeping pill under my doctors care. Oh how I long to fall asleep naturally. I fear that taking all these pills will kill me, eventually.

Yikes, that’s not a great message to hear — that you’ll be doomed to sleep issues for the rest of your life. I don’t know of any clinical evidence to support such a claim!

Ultimately, insomnia exists for as long as we “try” to sleep, for as long as we “try” to avoid wakefulness, and for as long as we “try” to fight or avoid all the difficult thoughts, feelings, and emotions that like to come along for the ride.

That’s because we cannot control any of these things. The more we try, the more we struggle. And, that struggle is usually exhausting and can lead us away from living the kind of life we want to live.

An alternative approach is to move away from that natural desire to control the difficult stuff we can’t control. To allow it to exist, and then use all the spare energy we have freed up to do things that help us move toward the kind of life we want to live.

When we are doing things that help us move toward the kind of life we want to live — even in the presence of all the difficult stuff — the difficult stuff might start to have less of an influence over us.

If we can drop the struggle and the attempts to control what cannot be controlled, we might start to do a bit better.

I hope there’s something helpful here.

Thanks for your reply Martin. However it has been years since I ““try” to sleep, for as long as we “try” to avoid wakefulness, and for as long as we “try” to fight or avoid all the difficult thoughts, feelings, and emotions that like to come along for the ride. ” I learned that a long time ago. When I go to bed I pray a prayer of thankfulness; do breathing exercises then let happen what will happen. Sleep is a lot easier now with my sleep meds regiment but it is not a good substitute for natural sleep. If I let my meds’s script lapse because of forgetfulness I do not sleep at all that night.
The problem with my sleep med regiment is that I am always tired just like I was before I started taking sleep meds. Peace!

I wonder if the sleeping medication might be a way of “trying” to sleep? What about the breathing exercises?
