      Hello
My name is Scott. I am giving an update on my insomnia. I completed the course about 6 months ago. It is been about 11 months since my severe 3 month insomnia episode. Today, I am sleeping about 7 hrs a night. I still wake up a couple times a night, but I pretty much fall asleep right away. Which didn’t happen before. Occasionally, I have a little bit of a rough nights sleep (which happens to everyone), But it doesn’t happen very much. Which I am so happy about. Especially, in this time of anxiety and depression. I had a conditioned arousal, anxiety problem as soon as I tried to sleep. Which makes sleep super hard. Now, it is pretty much gone. Also, I go to bed at around the same time and get up at the same time. Even, if I don’t fall asleep right away, I still stay in bed. I only get out if I am anxious or frustrated. Basically, just try and relax. Usually, I fall asleep pretty quickly. When you are locked in insomnia “hell”, it can feel so defeating. There is a way out for sure. I set up my routine and never take my sleep for granted. Like I used to. I started a new job, I draw, workout, etc. I am living my life. Not letting insomnia dictate it for me. If you are still struggling, please don’t give up. It will get better. Your body will let you sleep. I don’t let things bother my like they did before. If it happens it will happen. No use worrying about it. Life is too short not to live it! Congratulations to everyone who got their life back. Also, to those still having a hard time. Keep at it. We have all been in the same boat. I will gladly help anyway I can, as I know others will also. Thanks you and sweet dreams!!!

My insomnia hell has lasted a similar amount to yours, but yet at almost 4 months I am still not seeing any end in sight. Although your words are very encouraging and I will keep mind of this…thank you. What worked the most for you in the sleep restriction programme?

          R.E.M.,
I am sorry to hear you are struggling. The sleep restriction helped me get a proper time in and out of bed. It helped discipline me into a sleep routine. I am not gonna lie, I struggled with getting out of bed at my set time. Probably because it would take a me a littler longer to fall asleep. Eventually, I got close enough to my set awake time and it was a small victory. Before, my sleep schedule was erratic. The restriction helped me develop a habit and my body started to respond. Responding by getting tired at the beginning of my window. Which I struggled with before. The first week or so can be rough. Since you are only allowing 6.5 hrs. Assuming you fall asleep right away. Plus, if you don’t sleep well one night, your sleep drive will be stronger the next. So usually you will get a better nights sleep. Eventually, your body will get tired, and you will fall asleep and stay asleep longer. It takes some time, but consistency pays off. Plus the program helped me develop good sleeping habits and techniques. It isn’t easy, but neither is not sleeping well. I wish you the best, and hope you start sleeping well very soon. I know you can do it!!
