      Hi

I've had insomnia for a few weeks with from nil to 8 hours sleep, often less than 5. I started amytryptaline about 3 days ago and I,Ve been using zopiclone, which I gather is pretty noxious and I'm trying to get off it. I've had 8 hours sleep the last 2 nights – great ! – with half a z before going to sleep and another half when I wake up at 1 or 2 am. However today I feel spaced out and a bit jittery from late morning despite good sleep for a couple of nights. Has anyone else experienced this ? I'm wondering if it's a drug effect. Or maybe I took the second half zop too late – about 2am. I felt fine yesterday. Interested to know if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks Charles

Somewhat, I guess it could also be an accumulated sleep deficit, if there is such a thing, as my everage is about 5 hours a night which is not enough for me and perhaps one needs several good nights sleep ..or longer to feel completely normal. When you overcame your insomnia did it take you a while in terms of good nights sleep before you felt unfatigued and generally normal ?

          Thanks

I was lucky in that I didn't have to wean myself off sleeping pills since I didn't get started on them. Are you still on sleeping pills now? If so, you may want to talk to your doctor about a tapering off plan.

I feel that sleeping medication mainly you get you to sleep but are no much use in maintaining sleep. I also feel that the quality of sleep with medication is different in some way and for sure they do leave their after effect the next day.

Sleeping pills tend to work well as sedatives, but they don’t address the root cause of most cases of insomnia. Therefore, as soon as someone stops taking sleeping pills, the insomnia often returns. Sleeping pills are usually most appropriate for short-term sleep disruption. They are not the best avenue for long-term sleep issues.

I can tell you this, I never received any benefit from sleeping pills. Neither over the counter nor prescription helped me in the slightest. In fact the only times medication ever helped, if you can call it that, was when I was injected with sedatives meant to knock one out immediately. Living in the Philippines I could go to the ER at the Hospital down the street and they would sedate me then it was off to the house before it took effect. I was frequently up 3-4 day stretches then, 5 hrs a night would have been a gift from heaven.

I now sleep 6 to 8 hrs daily with zero meds, you can get there too. You have to want it and work towards that goal. It is easy to give up, to let ones mind keep you in your current place. The choice to move from that place is yours, no one can make it for you.
