I’ve struggled with anxiety for most of my life, but I’ve always been able to manage it through exercise and mindfulness, without any meds.

I’ve been experiencing debilitating insomnia over the past 3 weeks that seemingly came out of nowhere. It literally hit me like a bus. I have never struggled with sleeping, and for the past 3 weeks, I’ve been averaging about 3 hours per night, most nights I don’t fall asleep until 6 or 7 in the morning after trying to sleep around 11 or 12. When I do sleep, it’s thanks to OTC sleep aids. I am exhausted, foggy, terrified, anxious, and demoralized.

I suspect that my insomnia is a result of underlying anxiety, but what I want to know is, is my case too severe for this course to realistically be worth a shot? I read about a lot of people who struggle to fall asleep within an hour, or wake up after 5 hours of sleep, and sign up for this course. That would be a blessing for me if that was the outcome!

I just want some feedback before I pay for this course. I am a 27 year old female.

        Hey @Tired587!

Welcome to the forum! I wouldn’t consider this much different than, say, beginning a fitness routine for better health or diet to lose weight – at first, you may find it difficult to remain committed and you’re not sure what you’re doing will have any benefits but if you remain committed and have some patience, you’ll see positive results. Some of the advice in the program may seem counterintuitive, but I’ve (and many others on this forum) who’ve remained vigilant with these evidence-based techniques have successfully overcome their sleep disruption.

I hope that helps and I hope to see you back on hear to share your success story with us!

          Hello and greetings!
Your condition isn’t even considered severe. I have encountered a story of a guy who went without sleep for 4 days straight due to severe sleep anxiety and despite this he was shooting rifles and sprinting during the day because he was drafted in the military. He then suffered from on off insomnia for 15 years before he finally “gets it” and sleeps great now! Realise that CBT-i doesn’t need you to take meds or seek any “external” help because what you need to sleep well is already inside you. This has always been the case and always will be. The ability to sleep is really innate to every person or animal. It is just your irrational thoughts and behaviors that are keeping you stuck indefinitely. Insomnia isn’t really an illness, it is just a term to name someone whose sleeping pattern are all over the place, ie, falling asleep at different times and sleeping different amounts each time. But overall, your average sleep duration should be the same over the long term. Between 6 to 7 hours. It is very similar to eating a similar amount of calories each day. And fear of not sleeping well is really like a fear of not eating well. How is that even possible?? Because everyone knows how to eat and they will eat when they eventually get hungry enough. It’s exactly the same because you will sleep when you get sleepy enough. CBT-i just helps make your nights become more regular. Good luck!
