      Hi all.

I have been struggling for 10 weeks with an anxiety disorder.

My sleep has been up and down but the last 5 nights have been awful. I hate to admit it but I have had to USE sleeping pills even just to get me 1 hours sleep.

As seems like now I am anxious to go to sleep. I even get anxious if I try and have a nap.

      Thanks in advance

Hi Withers85, by anxiety disorder I am assuming you mean more than a stressful event you are dealing with at present, but rather a general sense of anxiety which persists regardless of how things are going right now at home, work, etc.

Are you seeing a therapist who has actually made this diagnosis? If not, could this be helpful?

There is no shame in using a pharmaceutical sleep aid to get over a temporary bout of insomnia, though best to explore this avenue with a professional.

Martin’s materials can help a lot toward approaching sleep without the sense of desperation that we can understandably fall into. Hard to think straight when we are exhausted, and so easy to attach to much importance on thoughts.

I hope you can stick with this website.

Sorry to hear of your recent sleep difficulties. Anxiety can definitely make it more difficult to sleep, but sleep will always happen in the end — no matter how anxious we might be.

We can get most caught up in anxiety when we try to fight or suppress it. Sometimes, it can be helpful to make some room for anxiety — even though it can be uncomfortable — because when we allow it to be present, it tends to have less power over us and might have less influence over our lives.
