I was convinced that I had some kind of chemical in balance and when my doctor found what it was I would go back to my sleepy self in no time. Every lab done not only disproved that thought but I was apparently quite healthy. Using intensive EMDR therapy, sleep meds for a short period of time helped much of my anxiety helped a lot but I was never fully at peace and was subconsciously waiting for something to set off horrible sleep or just lack of sleep. Even after getting off meds and sleeping 6-7 hours a night for months I still thought I was not fully recovered. I realized that when something that brought me high anxiety would bring poor sleep. After hearing on the Joe Rohan podcast how anything less than 7 hours a night we certainly cause me to suffer an endless list of illnesses. Once I heard that this was not so I’ve been able to have much more peace and starting the sleep restrictions has allowed me to feel more in control of my destiny. I won’t die of heart failure if I have a few nights of bed sleep or no sleep. My days have become much more enjoyable and I’ve been able to feel pretty good even when I only get a few hours of sleep. Thank you so much Martin for your knowledge that you share with so many struggling. I know I will be not just fine but I will enjoy my life more thru this experience. God bless everyone struggling and hang in there this too shall pass 🙏😊

Thank you for sharing your experience — there’s a lot of scary and confusing stuff about sleep out there!

Insomnia can definitely be difficult (no doubt about that!) and yet there’s no proof that it’s going to cause a health problem or that it increases mortality (one study that involved about 37 million people found no increase in mortality in people with chronic insomnia compared to people without chronic insomnia).

So much of the difficulty can come from our understandable efforts to make sleep happen or to get rid of insomnia. Those efforts can create a struggle that can consume a huge amount of our energy and attention.

It sounds as though you’ve been moving away from that struggle and are finding that, without the struggle, you are better able to live the kind of life you want to live. And, with less struggle, conditions for sleep become a lot better, too!
