I was always a great sleeper until a couple of months ago. I had a great Christmas and New Year with family and friends, attended a wedding and felt so refreshed and relaxed.

I could sense the return to work looming a couple of days before I went back and some low level anxiety started to creep in. The funny thing is I don’t hate my job, I actually quite enjoy it. However, I am new, so I’m wondering if that triggered the anxiety.

The night before going back to work was terrible, I got 0 hours, 0 minutes. I thought it was a one off, but that one bad night kick-started the insomnia and now I am here.

The worst thing is I know it is all a mental challenge. When I am with my boyfriend (we are long distance) I sleep fine. When it’s the weekend, I sleep fine. It’s the work nights when I’m alone that the insomnia rears its head.

I start to feel anxious about 4pm about bedtime. I have tried implementing a whole host of sleep hygiene & CBT-I techniques and nothing seems to be working, I can’t rid myself of the anxiety.

You may want to check out another, little known therapy called ACT. I tried it and it worked for me. Read The Sleep Book by Dr. Guy Meadows who developed it. It’s based on learning to relax in bed so that you naturally fall asleep.

You mentioned that you have tried cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques but they didn’t work — how long were you implementing CBT-I techniques for and what specific techniques did you implement?
