      1. In October last year I experiencing something weird: vibrations in the head and upper body area at the precise point when I am about to fall asleep, an unpleasant sensation. The only reference to it I found is in this online discussion:

      – Body vibrations when falling asleep
      https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/body-vibrations

Note the reference to COVID vaccine!

There is nothing else. My PCP and UCSF neurologist had nothing to say.

      2. Two weeks ago I got a sudden onset of insomnia: unable to fall asleep without at least 7.5mg of Temazepam, and even with that I get only 3-5 hours of sleep with wakeups.

I did not connect 1 and 2 until a couple of nights ago.

Usually one is unaware of the exact point of falling asleep. But while trying to fall asleep without pills I realized that because the vibrations occur exactly at that point and are rather unpleasant, they give a mental jolt that stops the process — they essentially keep you wide awake.

If so, one must eliminate those vibrations but nobody seem to know about them.

      Anybody experienced this? Thoughts, ideas?

I wonder if this might be connected to hypnic jerks — something that can definitely make things difficult and yet tends not to respond well to our understandable efforts to fight or avoid them.

Have you discussed this with your doctor? If you’re given a clean bill of health, these symptoms might be connected to a heightened level of arousal.

You might find this YouTube video (and all the comments that come with it) helpful: Why you jerk yourself awake every time you try to fall asleep (and what to do about it).
