I'm afraid the libraries in Belgium are not that advanced yet. But I don't mind. The selection e-books in Dutch is very small, about 4.000 titles. Which for me, is very limited. So I switched to reading in English.
Not only are there more titles available, I can keep up-to-date with my favorite authors. Translations tend to be coming late or not at all in our little country.
June 9, 2011 at 11:25 am #12064I am reading a book called 'The Worst Jobs in History' http://www.unofficialtonyrobinsonwebsite.co.uk/pages/worst_jobs/worst_jobs.htm for the official website. Some of the stories make grim reading like:
The Spit boy – who had to turn the spit over a roaring fire at Hampton Court, and ended up almost being cooked themselves by the heat.
Grooms of the stool – well someone had to wipe King Henry the 8th's bottom.
Also people cleaned out the blockages in the pipes under palaces which was horrifically smelly and could result asphyxiation because of the stench alone.
The book doesn't mention the chimney boys who were sent up into dark narrow chimneys to clean the soot and grime out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimney_sweep gives more detail about this. It doesn't even bare thinking about that children as young as five were sent up into 9in square space using back, feet and knees to propel themselves. No wonder some of them got stuck!

I wish I could just learn another language to expand my reading list!! Actually, learning another language fluently is still a life goal of mine. Need to get started on that one!

I think I could do with a groom of the stool. Any takers?

When I have a flatmate who does not read instructions and then wonders why she screws up every piece of technology she touches…I kinda have no choice 😉

I read every instruction manual ever. And practically memorise them 😀
Right now I'm reading several books, one on ancient Greece and one the Enlightenment, plus I'm rereading the complete Oz set, and all the Alice books.
November 4, 2011 at 12:51 am #12070I'm just about to start the last Harry Potter book — have also watched the previous movies on DVD, so I hope I can see Parts 1 and 2 of the movie versions of Deathly Hallows soon after I finish the book.

I think I've seen the first two movies, but I'm not watching them again, or any of the others, until they are all out on dvd. I plan to buy the whole set, and sit down and watch them all in a marathon viewing. I did just reread all the books though. Enjoyed them just as much as I did the first time I read them.
November 4, 2011 at 8:39 am #12072Is it bad that I've not read any of the Harry Potter books? Oh, and like Caers, I plan to get all the movies in one go when they are all released although I'll probably buy digital copies.
I'm currently reading 2 books as and when my concentration allows me.
The first one is Humble Pie by chef Gordon Ramsay, and is an autobiography. An interesting book, talking about his childhood, his short lived football career and more. It's not too bad a read, and also explains a lot about the me we all know and “love” as one of the sweariest chefs.
The other book I'm reading is Trust Me, I'm Dr Ozzy and is a selection of letters from columns that rock legend turned under the thumb man Ozzy Osbourne does. The are some great letters and they are quite funny.
Both books were purchased from the Apple iBookstore.

Nah… I've not read any of the books and when I went to the cinema to see the first movie, I fell asleep.
I am currently reading A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War – and very interesting it is, too.

What an excellent idea. We did a marathon viewing this summer. Me and my 2 sons watched all of them in the 3 days before the opening day. Then went to the theatre to see the last one. After being in the Harry Potter world for so long, we were sad it was over.
By the way, I read all of the books, probably about 5 times. So yeah, you really should read them.
February 7, 2012 at 7:07 am #12075The Hunger Games series where good
February 15, 2012 at 6:40 pm #12076I'm reading Notes From The Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I've got several of his other books, and I love that man. He's an amazing writer. The book is awesome so far.

I read Crime and Punishment a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. What's your favorite Dostoevsky book?
