Every night I sleep 3 hours, typically from 10 pm to 1 am. I’ve tried staying up later, going to bed earlier, even after being awake all night long I only slept 3 hours the next night. I wake up after three hours and feel awful, completely exhausted, just no life in my body. It’s a frightening feeling. Been going on for over two years. I try to do as much as I can the next day but it’s so hard after over two years. I have so many strange physical symptoms now. I am in such distress all day, mentally and physically. Please I’m in such a hopeless dark place. I need help.

Thanks for sharing! Do you actually feel sleepy when you go to bed or are you only going to bed because that’s a set time? Are you experiencing any anxious thoughts when you wake at 1am? When you wake at 1am, do you remain in bed or do you get out of bed and engage in a more relaxing activity?

Hi yes very sleepy at 10. When I wake up a few hours later my extreme physical symptoms (like there’s no life in my body, exhausted, heavy feeling) feel so bad and then all the thoughts eventually come in; missing my life, my family is worried about me, when will this end, all come in. So between the physical and then the mental I can’t sleep. I force myself out of bed but I’m too awake after all that ti talk back to sleep. Total misery Thank you for responding ???

Do you feel as though you might be putting effort into falling back to sleep when you wake during the night or otherwise putting pressure on yourself to fall back to sleep?

              Hi Martin
Not really putting pressure on myself ~ really can’t handle the physical part. It feel so awful that I can’t get back to sleep. The degree of fatigued scares me and feels horrific. I don’t know how to handle it. I’ve had lab work done and nothing wrong thankfully but it feels so bad.

Fatigue is definitely uncomfortable — there can be no argument there! How do you normally respond to that fatigue?

It’s been going on so long and harder to cope with that I have developed weird symptoms and habits like tensing/gripping my body in an attempt to fight it off. It’s gone beyond normal fatigue. I shake when I have to get out out of bed dreading how I’ll feel. When I stand it feels so heavy and awful. I can’t relax now during the day because when I finally “let go” I feel the fatigue even more. I don’t know how I’ll ever break this cycle.

It happened again last night, this time after just one hour of sleep. I woke up feeling like there’s no life or energy in my body. It’s such an awful feeling. Didn’t want to try to get up and out of bed. After two hours I put earbuds in and listened to a sleep hypnosis thing from you tube and fell asleep for one hour. This is so bad. I really need your advice please.

If only we could control how we feel and what we think! Unfortunately, we can’t — and it’s when we (quite understandably!) try to do so that we really get tangled up in an endless struggle.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to acknowledge all that difficult and unpleasant fatigue inside your body and even allow it to exist — to make a bit of space for it inside you. Then, engage in actions (no matter how small) that are aligned with your values and help you continue to move toward the kind of life you want to live, even in the presence of that difficult fatigue?

Perhaps that might be more helpful than trying to eliminate the fatigue — something it sounds as though you’ve valiantly tried to do for a long time, without success?
