I think.
I still have trouble sleeping at night, but, it's getting better.
Got a job I love back in October, moved into flat upstairs 2 weeks ago, 3 days ago got called into a meeting, current manager is being moved, so I've been promoted to assistant manager while they send me on management training course and get my license then I'll become manager.
Life, this past few months, has absolutely been amazing and I've noticed this past few days, I've been falling asleep at around 3 AM, and even waking up at a decent time around 8 AM and I feel happy, refreshed, ready to take on the new tasks and day. Whereas I used to be up for – 2-3 days at a time then crash and sleep til silly o'clock.
Could happiness be the key ingredient to curing insomnia?

Thanks Martin, I appreciate that! And yes, life has certainly turned around for the MUCH better. Finally got my own flat above the place I'm now assistant manager of (The Sherwood Ranger Inn, Worksop). Finally living all alone, and finally have a job I'm passionate about and love.
Now all I have to do is keep the alcohol demons away and don't screw it up!

January 21, 2012 at 2:38 am #13562Great news! That is a very interesting and good question, does happiness cure insomnia? I'm not sure of the answer. I wouldn't say I am unhappy or happy, but am more satisfied or content with my life overall. Maybe insomnia is all about what is going on subconsciously?
January 21, 2012 at 3:48 am #13563Well, only just finished work, and although I'm very very tired, I can't sleep. And I gotta be up at 8-9 for the draymen. Maybe I was on a happiness high. Mind you, might not be a bad sign, it's been a very long, stressful day, and I only literally finished half an hour ago (naughty lock in), and I always need a little wind down anyway. I'm off to bed after checking my regular forums & emails so will let ya know tomorrow if I went straight to sleep or struggled!

I think you might be on to something with the happiness being a part of a cure for insomnia.
I had a very weird year last year with extreme highs and lows and I did find that when I was stressed and had a lot of depressing things going on in my life, my insomnia seemed to kick in. Overall though, it was a happy year and my sleep pattern has definitely improved. I used to sleep for about 4 hours a night, if at all, at the start of last year. Of the 4 hours I would still wake up at least once (I have MS, my bladder has a mind of it's own!) Now, I sleep for 7-8 hours quite happily, obviously I still wake up but I generally feel more rested when I get up in the morning.
When I have a lot going on in my life, I struggle with sleep more. Too many thoughts going through my head at once which stops me being able to 'switch off'. I've found though that if I write down what's going on in my head then it helps to clear it a little, allowing me to get to sleep. I have a little notebook and also write a blog online. It was a trick my health psychologist taught me, it helps to get it out of your head and the next day you can go back to it and reflect on whether it is worth stressing about or not. It's a simple thing but seems to work. I have since told a few of my friends to try it who didn't know why they couldn't sleep and within a few weeks, they found out what was the main trigger for their own lack of sleep!
I hope last night was just a blip for you and it hasn't ruined your new and improving sleep pattern 🙂

I don't know about happiness being the cure but I am 100% sure that stress is the cause of my sleep probs! I guess if i'm not stressed then i'm more happy, so that makes sense. Been up since 3am today, so got 4 broken hours last night. Not sure what went wrong. I had a nice day, went for acupuncture, sorted out some wee niggles, bought my hubby's birthday present, took the kids to see Warhorse (a must see film BTW) and then out for dinner afterwards. You'd think that would set me up for a nice night of slumber…but no! Oh well…will take the dog for a long walk today and see if the fresh air doesn't make me sleep better tonight.
But to go back, yes I think happiness / depression / stress interplaying have a lot to do with sleeping well.

January 26, 2012 at 12:57 pm #13566Congratulations on the new job Tom. 🙂 I think there has to be a link between happiness and getting a good nights sleep, because obviously if you are happy and not worrying about anything, it's got to make you sleep better hasn't it?
I remember when you used to be up all hours of the day and night. You'd often post at silly o clock when you should have been asleep and your diet didn't help either. Do you still live on pot noodles? tsk tsk.
Good to know things are getting better for you. 🙂

Yes.
I've had a few good months of decent sleep after starting a new job in September. I was suffering from not being able to get to sleep and also not being able to stay asleep. This then changed to having my few usual hours of staring at the ceiling followed by falling asleep around midnight for at least 6 solid hours.
At the time I didn't equate it to being happy to be earning money again after being unemployed for so long. I thought it was to do with the shift in patterns and being tired after a 9-6 day, my commute, learning a new job etc.
Now however, I am not enjoying my job at all and I'm already fantasising about leaving. I'm miserable, stressed and I can't relax despite doing Pilates and Yoga in the week and attending a meditation session once a fortnight. As a result, I'm now averaging about 3 hours sleep a night and the usual signs of caffeine dependency, pessimism and irritability are back.
My insomnia is born of my sad situation, but not being able to sleep increases my levels of despondency and the monster only grows. I am certain that happiness and general mental wellbeing is key to a good night's sleep.

LOL no I've moved on from pot noodles……. to pot pasta. You know those pasta in sauce you bung in the microwave for a minute? Living on them at the minute haha
