Can diet affect sleep

      Hi

      I’ve had insomnia for about 6 months. Sometimes I don’t sleep at all, sometimes I doze all night but don’t get any real sleep and accasionally I get about 5-6 hours glorious sleep. I’ve tried a six week course of CBT but that hasn’t helped. I don’t have anxiety, I exercise well, and I have good sleep hygiene. I have have Graves disease (overactive thyroid) but that is in remission and shouldn’t be causing a problem. I’m beginning to suspect there may be something in my diet that is causeing this. Does anyone have experience of where cutting out a particular food has helped? What foods might be most suspect?

        I have seen that on the web Penny but never explored it much. There are articles out there on how certain foods can keep you awake. Try Googling that and see what comes up. Sorry I can’t be of more help to you.

          I researched this and came to the conclusion that apart from the obvious i.e. caffeine, eat large meals late at night, spicy foods late at night etc  what you eat is not really going to impact your sleep that much.

           

          That said a good, clean diet is not going to harm your sleep….

            That’s certainly what the NHS seems to think. Strange thing was when I went on the AIP diet for 3 days I slept really well. Then I stopped and I didn’t. The trouble is, its really stringent and not something that I’d want to do for very long and it would take ages to test out each food one by one. The problem is I’ve tried all the normal things and nothing really seems to work. I suspect you’re probably right though – probably coincidence.

              Hello Penny. Unfortunately, changing your diet is unlikely to address chronic insomnia. You mentioned that you went through a six-week course of CBT-I but it didn’t help. Can you tell us more about that? I think exploring this further would likely provide a better avenue to explore to get your sleep back on track.
