I’ve had sleeping disorders my whole life but my current struggle is staying asleep. I’m waking up every 45 minutes and the longest I’ve stayed asleep for is 3 hours. After those 3 hours if I try to fall asleep, as soon as I’m about to fall into sleep my heart starts pounding and racing causing me to wake up gasping for air. Sometimes even bringing me to tears.

I’ve taken over the counter sleeping pills and 7.5mg of zopilcone but neither have helped me stay asleep.

I’ve tried meditation to calm my heart down, even smoking weed and drinking water. But nothing makes it stop. I haven’t had a good sleep in a week and feel like I’m going to go insane if I don’t soon.

I don’t always struggle this bad but I need help on staying asleep please.

Welcome to the forum, Hollyjra. You mention that you have had sleeping disorders your whole life — have you been diagnosed with a sleep disorder other than insomnia?

It sounds as though you have some hyperarousal and this may explain why you suddenly become highly alert when you are about to sleep. You might find these videos helpful:

The reason why you feel alert and wide-awake as soon as you get into bed

Why you feel a sense of panic when you drift off to sleep (or when you wake during the night)

Why you feel so sleepy before the sleep window begins, but feel wide awake as it gets closer

Have you looked into (or tried) cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques?

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now!
