I started the 2 week course at the beginning of February and am in my 4th week of CBTi, with a sleep window of 5.5 hours. I’m only averaging 4 hours of sleep a night, so progress is slow. (I’m almost done tapering off Clonazepam, so that has made things much more complicated) My biggest concern at the moment is that I’m going on a 5 night trip in a few days. I don’t want to throw away or pause all the work I’ve put into CBTi. I’ll be dealing with a 2 hour time difference and staying with my daughter and grand baby. Does anyone have tips about how to handle travel and CBT-i at the same time. February has been a tough month already and this will make things extra tricky. But I’m feeling determined. I really appreciate the support and reassurance I have felt from Martin and the Forum, podcasts and videos.

Great question and a common dilemma!

I think this is best answered with another question — what’s more important to you? Protecting your sleep at all costs, or getting away and spending time with your daughter and grandchild?

Oh, and here’s another question — in 100 years from now, will you be remembering all the best nights of sleep you had, or will you be remembering all the important, enjoyable, and enriching things you did when awake?

By all means, implement CBT-I techniques when away, but consider making the experience of spending time with your daughter and grandchild (and doing things that are life-enriching and aligned with your values) your focus and your priority!

Martin, I can’t thank you enough for taking time to respond to my question. I think I was so caught up in CBTi that I was making that issue, my most important focus. While I had been obsessed with sleep worries before, I recently have been getting obsessed with my sleep window and progress. You reminded me that I’d rather look back and remember a wonderful visit with my daughter and grand baby, than a week of stressing over proper sleep window and groggy time with my special reunion. I have decided to enjoy this brief visit with family without over stressing. I can implement some of what I’ve been doing (going to bed when sleepy) and trying not to fight sleep. I am here enjoying time with family right now and will return home to focus on CBTi with a fresh approach. I’m so grateful for the support and guidance. I know I’m moving in the right direction
