I have been suffering extremely badly with insomnia for the past few months and over the last few weeks it has built to being most nights. It was originally due to work stress but now my work is fine and everything is fine and my only worry is sleeping and nighttime.

This week I have not had a night where I have slept more than 1 hour, I lie in bed from 11 until 6am awake but exhausted. I have no energy and feel hugely depressed, it is affecting my work life and social life. I don’t know how I can ever overcome this now it is happening so frequently and not just on the odd evening.

I’d love to know how you can help me or what I can do to help myself.

Stressful life events can certainly throw a wrench in our sleep, but it’s usually temporary. Once the stressor is gone, sleep is usually restored to it’s previous state unless we begin to change our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep disruptions. Once we start changing our daily routines and believing in our thoughts, our sleep issue can perpetuate. The good news is that you can overcome this hiccup in your sleep.

Sorry to hear how difficult things are for you at the current time. The fact that your sleep issues are sticking around even though that work stress is no longer present isn’t unusual — when sleep problems remain when the initial trigger is no longer an issue, it’s down to a change in the relationship we have with our thoughts and a change in our sleep-related behaviors.

These changes, although completely understandable, end up perpetuating the sleep disruption just as Scott described.

You mentioned that you’re currently spending about seven hours in bed — if you are averaging less than about six or six-and-a-half hours of sleep each night, it might be worth going to bed a bit later to help build that sleep drive and reduce the amount of time available for nighttime wakefulness.

I hope there’s something helpful here.
