I have had Insomnia for about 15 years now. It’s gotten so bad now that I will go most nights with no sleep at all. I take medication for it, but it’s not working. I feel like my mental health is really going downhill because of this. I have tried everything under the moon to help me sleep but nothing works. I am at the end of my rope and feel like I am in a constant living nightmare. I really don’t know how much more I can handle without having a breakdown.

I will not claim to have a “one size fits all” solution. All I can say is I had insomnia for a long time, too (and still do, at times, but nobody sleeps great every night).

I can relate to not knowing “how much more I can handle.” It is easy to slide into a rabbit hole and see no way out. I think it is called depressive rumination.

Anyway, I did have a breakdown and checked myself into a psychiatric hospital, where I met many other normal people who were not “loony,” most of whom were having trouble sleeping. My alternative was suicide, or at least that’s the way I saw it.

I am not saying this is the path for you, but a professional diagnosis might be helpful. I can say for sure that staying alone with this and getting more desperate is not a good path.

You are not alone: there are tens of millions of people who slept poorly last night, and many millions who are chronically exhausted, feeling they have nowhere to go. Suggest that you stick with this forum—and definitely check out what Martin is saying.

        Take care, my friend.

@Mlf895 – thanks for sharing. I can relate to experiencing a breakdown when I had insomnia and wasn’t able to sleep for 4 days in a row. I remember getting out of bed that morning and crying the entire time I was making coffee. The anxiety for those who have insomnia is powerful and can seem unbearable at times. There is hope though! I found relief when I began implementing the cognitive and behavioral therapy for insomnia techniques found here: https://insomniacoach.com/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-insomnia/ and I think you could strongly benefit from them also. Have you tried using these techniques?

It’s not surprising that medication hasn’t worked since nothing can generate sleep except a strong sleep drive. Cognitive and behavioral therapy for insomnia techniques explains how to overcome our arousal system by building a strong sleep drive during the day.

          Hope that helps!
