I haven’t had insomnia long, but I feel overwhelmed and hopeless. This is new to me and all started with a single night of no sleep following an overseas flight, which my mind has since spiraled into catastrophizing and now more sleepless nights. Trying to accept my situation and not “feed into it”, but it’s all I think about or read about it or search about it…any words of wisdom or encouragement would be appreciated!!! I just started the free 2 week program

You are not alone! I have had insomnia really bad for about 2-3 months now. I started to the full program three days ago and it is already helping a little bit. The instruction about making sure you are exhausted is obvious, but great. I disturbed that pattern somehow then catastrophized every time I woke up. After hearing some of Martin’s feedback and a little sleep, I have been able to convince myself that being up is not horrible.

Long story short, listen to what he says and follow his guidelines. I found that just getting a little break and taking away some of the guilt has given me hope. I think the next 5+ weeks will help a lot.

Welcome to the forum @Jbock77! As you can see from the response from @MBInsomnia25, you aren’t alone!

It’s natural that you think about your current situation — that’s your brain doing its job and looking out for you.

Your experience probably tells you that thoughts are largely out of your control and the more you try to fight or avoid certain thoughts, the more difficult they can become. If that’s the case, what might an alternative way of dealing with them look like, do you think?

On the other hand, reading about this and searching about it are actions — and you can always control your actions.

So, if you feel that ongoing reading and searching isn’t helpful, might be putting more focus on sleep, and might be pulling you away from doing other things that help you live the life you want to live, what might some alternative ways of using that time involve? What might some more workable and productive actions be?
