My brother has had circadian rhythm disorder for about 15 years as well as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. 3 years ago he had excessive daytime sleepiness and was prescribed amphetamines. Last year he decided to get off of it because he was noticing it is messing with his sleep.

That’s when he got insomnia and nonrestorative sleep. Now he sleeps between 4-8 hours per day/night but he is always sleep-deprived. That also worsened his mental issues and caused anger, fears, restlessness, etc. He is very suicidal.

The doctors cannot do anything because whichever medication he tried it made it way worse. Blue light didn’t help and even melatonin makes him feel worse.

He tried CBD oil and many other natural remedies to no avail.

The tests showed mild to moderate sleep apnea but he cannot use the machine. Maybe that would help if he succeeded to use the CPAP but the machine won’t let him sleep.

He wants to go to the hospital but in a psych ward they will force him to take pills he cannot take, his sleep will be more disturbed and I’m afraid will get worse.

Very worried. He is only 34.

        Hello
I am sorry to hear about your brother’s issues. It’s probably better to consult your medical professionals than seeking advice in an online forum like this because nobody here is qualified to give medical or professional psychological advice, even more so without actually seeing the patient in person. Having suidical thoughts isn’t normal and needs urgent professional attention and counselling. Good luck, I hope he finds relief soon.

Yes he is getting medical attention as much as possible for his situation and the ability to find proper care.

But I posted this question here for 2 reasons. One is because I thought this is a sleep health forum and 2, you never know where you can find life-changing advice.

          Thank You

            Hi yazz…
I am speaking from my experience and this in no way can replace professional medical advice, both the anxiety and sleep issues have a common solution, just do nothing. Stop trying so hard. Allowing emotions to flow no matter how uncomfortable they are. Look up Claire Weekes’ treatment method for anxiety and she said the same thing, just do nothing and allow yourself to be overtaken by anxiety until your mind realises that whatever that’s bothering you just ceases to become a threat anymore. For sleep, just having a regular bedtime schedule of reasonable duration (6.5-7.5 hours is more than enough) is sufficient, the body should respond quite nicely within a few weeks. Best wishes to you and your brother.

Hi. Yes, that’s how my anxiety has gotten better. But there are cases where it won’t happen without medical intervention. Also, the circadian rhythm disorder won’t let you keep a healthy schedule. And when people have non-restorative sleep problems, then even 16 hours of sleep is not sufficient for them. Sleep is more about quality than quantity.

              Take care
