As Jane and Martin have contributed to a thread that got into the different ways we say things (and the confusion it can lead to!), I thought I'd get one going on just that topic.

In a recent Alexander McCall Smith book, set in Scotland, I had a heck of a time figuring out a food called “tablet.” All I could picture was a pill or a block of paper — as that's what tablet means her in the USA. Onto the internet I went to pursue an answer. And I found out that it's a dessert sort of like fudge in consistency, but lighter in color. Am I right, Brit insomniac friends out there??

Ha! Well, to be honest I've not heard of 'tablet' being referred to as a type of food. Normally I'll associate that word with medicine – pills, specifically!

Have you ever been across the pond, Bobby? The UK and USA are united by an uncommon language, in my opinion!!

Tablet is a type of food. I'm from Dundee, Scotland and it's a well known sweet. It's similar to fudge but it's harder. It's lovely!!! Super sweet though and should only be consumed in small amounts! Haha.

Tried making it years ago and failed miserably, it ended up more like a runny fudge and had to be eaten with a spoon…still tasted good though, even with a spoon!!

Hope that helps. If you need further proof, send me your address and I'll send you some! 🙂

Ah well, that's the Scots for ya 😉

Which is the better desert – deep fried Mars bars or a piece of tablet?

I'll withdraw now before unintentionally offending and going way off topic and turning this into a discussion about cuisine!!
