I’m not really sure where to reach out for help here, so I thought an insomnia forum might be my best bet.

Every night for at least 4 months I’ve been waking up suddenly and completely alert at around 4-6am. It usually takes me around 30 minutes to an hour to get back asleep. I’ve read other sleep forums and help tips that say to avoid caffeine, have proper sleeping conditions etc. I never do any harmful things though, so I can’t understand why this keeps happening to me. I’ve asked other family members if I snore in my sleep during hotel stays, but apparently I don’t so I don’t think I have sleep apnea.

So really, if I don’t have massive stress, I don’t drink, I have a solid sleep schedule and follow every proper procedure before bed why do I keep waking up? Could it be insomnia or something else?

Waking at 4-6am may be your body’s natural arising time. What time do you typically go to bed at night and how long does it take you to fall asleep? How do you feel when you wake in the morning, and how is your daytime performance?

I usually go to bed between 11pm-11:30… It takes me either from 5 minutes to 30 to fall asleep depending on the night, it seems on and off that I can’t fall asleep fast (like, every other day)

I feel pretty drowsy and my head feels foggy most of the time when I wake up, but I usually get over that and continue my day normally. It’s odd because I naturally wake up between 7am to 8 without trying even if I stay up past 2am (which is rare for me to do)

How many hours of sleep do you get on a typical night? How many hours of sleep do you feel you ‘need’ in order to feel good during the day? Do you normally feel sleepy and ready for sleep between 11pm and 11:30pm or do you feel sleepy earlier or later in the evening?

I get 8-9 hours of sleep every night, but I don’t need much to feel okay during the day but it depends on the context. Ive never felt physically unwell because of a lack of sleep, I could have 4 hours of sleep, wake up at 8am and feel kind of gross but regain strength in a few hours. Sometimes I’ll feel sleepy at 7 or 8pm but I ignore those feelings because thats too early to sleep. Most of the time I only sleep at the same time every night (11pm) because thats just when i feel to tired to do anything.

If you’re getting 8-9 hours of sleep each night, then it’s unlikely that you have insomnia. If you are concerned about your sleep, you may want to discuss your concerns with your doctor.
