Hi, I’ve had insomnia for about the last 15 years or so, but the last 2 years have gotten really bad, I probably average around 3 hours a night. What makes it worse is that I sleep in short spells of insanely intense dreams. Its as if I never rest or hit deep sleep. Sometimes I feel like I’ve been inside the dream for a week, I wake up and its 30 mins. The exhausting dreams then keep me awake for rest of night. This happens EVERY time I sleep. I can do everything in my power to perform sleep hygiene but it is useless as I cannot consciously control the intensity of my dreams. I have seeked mental health therapy a lot but am getting no where, this is crippling my life. I should add I have been on Mirtazapine for last 10 years, which may be something to do with it.
Can someone please explain the purpose of dreams and how exactly I sort this out?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Nobody knows the purpose of dreams — but we know that when we dream, we are asleep. So, dreams are a symptom of sleep.

If we have a high level of arousal, dreams can seem more intense and more vivid. So, tackling arousal might be a helpful way for you to improve your sleep.

We can lower arousal in a number of ways. One of which is building a strong sleep drive to overpower the arousal system by allotting an appropriate amount of time for sleep. Another is getting out of bed whenever being in bed doesn’t feel good. Another is to focus more attention on the pursuit of enjoyable daytime activities.

        I hope this helps.
