I tried a technique last night which is sometimes not recommended. I went to bed at my usual time of about 11PM last night. I had an exterior door to a balcony open so as to keep the temperature in the mid sixties. I did not seem to be falling asleep at 1 AM. I decided to drink a cup of wine. I brushed my teeth again and then went back to bed. I went to sleep and did not wake up until about 6:30AM. I got up, saw that the temperature had fallen to 62 degrees F. I closed the exterior door, used the bathroom, then went back to bed. I then got up at my usual time, 7AM. I feel well rested. So this method seems to have worked at least for last night.

Alcohol can help us fall asleep, but it leads to poor quality sleep. Furthermore, if you come to rely on alcohol as a sleep aid there is the risk of alcohol addiction and all the negative effects connected to that.

I’d encourage you to avoid using alcohol as a sleep aid and to implement cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques to address the root cause of your insomnia so you can improve your sleep over the long-term in a far more effective (and healthy) way.
