Hi, my biggest challenge is awakening after 4-5 hours sleep and being unable to fall back asleep again. I also have some problems with sleep onset insomnia. I suffer from delayed sleep phase syndrome and have a hard time getting to sleep before 1 AM ish. If I fall asleep at 1 AM and then wake 5 hours later at 6 AM, I know that people will start getting up and making noise in an hour or so. I will want to sleep until 8 AM but this will usually not be possible because of: 1. worry over only having a short window of time to get back to sleep before the house erupts into noise, 2. the house actually erupting into noise at 7-7:30 AM!
Depression and anxiety play a big part. I have very inconsistent work. I used to work a part time job with regular days and regular hours but the company I work for has been struggling for the past 2 years. Now I’m basically on call and I might get a week of work, followed by 2 months of nothing. I also receive disability benefits, which are totally insufficient to pay for food and rent. So I worry a lot about having enough money for the bare essentials. I live in an isolated community with very few jobs. I need to find more work. The longer I go without working, the more I suffer from depression and anxiety…which manifests as worry and arousal when I awaken after my usual 5 hours.

Yes I was diagnosed years ago in conjunction with sleep docs and sleep studies. It’s pretty darn obvious though! Treatments suggested / tried: morning bright light exposure using a bright light, melatonin, getting up at the same time each day, no caffeine after noon, bath 1-2 hours before desired bedtime, morning walks.

Did you work with a behavioral sleep specialist for the DSPS?
