The FDA has given final approval to the sleeping medication Belsomra (suvorexant) which works differently from other medications by temporarily blocking orexins that can cause wakefulness. It will be available in 5,10,15 and 20 mg tablets. The medication must still be approved by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). If the DEA approves it should be available in late 2014 or early 2015. The main side effect appears to be next day drowsiness, particularly when higher doses are used. Unanswered is the question of how long you can use it before it begins to lose effectiveness.

It will be interesting to see how effective this drug becomes in the real world.

As most people know, I prefer more effective therapies such as CBT rather than sleeping pills, but if they can help people get started on the journey towards improving their sleep, then short term use of pharmaceuticals has some value.
