Getting off Sleep Aides

      Hey there!

      (BACKGROUND)
      I have been wrestling with Acute Insomnia for many years, but it turned into Chronic Insomnia when I got engaged to my fiance 6 months ago. All the excitement caused me to have a bad week of sleep, I adjusted my behaviors (which now that I know of the three p’s I know was a mistake) and it went downhill fast.

      (6 WEEKS IN)
      Fast forward 6 months now and I am a big fan of Martin’s Podcast, and have been implementing CBTI (on my own, with the upcoming wedding I can’t afford the course) for 6 weeks now. I am proud to say that sleep has gotten way more consistent, I have cut the dose of sleeping aides that I take every night in half, and am regularly getting 6-6.5 hours of sleep.

      (THE PROBLEM)
      I am trying to make the next jump and remove the sleeping aides all together, but the past two nights when I have tried it I am too worried and constantly monitor myself as I lay in bed. I am worried that I have conditioned myself to thinking that I need it to sleep. Apologies for the long winded question, but does anyone have advice for taking that last step to remove sleeping aides? (I use 3g Melatonin and 12.5mg of Doxalamine Succinate/Unisom)

      I know I am going to kick this thing in the butt based on how much this course has already helped me, just looking for some more advice!

        That last step off the medication is often the most difficult — and it will always generate some heightened sleep disruption in the short term since your mind will want to be more active to monitor/evaluate the effect of going to bed without taking anything!

        However, the fact of the matter is, the human body doesn’t require any medication or supplement to generate sleep. It just needs to be awake for long enough!

        So, if you are determined not to take medication or supplements any longer, if you continue not to take them, sooner or later sleep will happen. And, when that sleep occurs without any medication or supplements, you will know for an absolute fact that you don’t need them to generate sleep!
