This is my first post. I’ve never asked for help or a chat online about sleep. I’ve been through psychiatric evaluation for psychosis but due to misunderstandings I left treatment before any diagnosis could be made. I’ve struggled with sleep since I started having the issues that led me to evaluation. I have depression and serve anxiety, 22 never worked and don’t leave the house, hugely apathetic toward life and don’t care much about getting involved with it. However one passion I have is writing, a passion I can not pursue because I am simply too tired and lethargic during the day. My primary problem is odd, I want to sleep so I can be awake in the day but at night I refuse to sleep, I make myself stay awake sometimes, I’ll drink coffee and stay downstairs powering through spells of tiredness. Often ending up asleep around 5 to 7 in the morning. When I do sleep well(ish) I have to do so by forcing myself to lay down and listen to podcasts. If I admit to myself I am going to go to sleep I will get up and go downstairs to avoid doing so. I’m not sure why I do it. I’ve had issues with paranoia in the past but to my knowledge there is no reason I won’t sleep. By that I mean in the past I would stay up till 2 every night because if I didn’t then “bad things” would happen, that no longer drives me to stay awake. Should I just practice sleep hygiene or see a doctor? Hygiene is hard due to my brain constantly swaying between caring about this issue and not, and, seeing a doctor is almost impossible due to my anxiety. I guess those reasons explain why I’m here. Thanks for any replies, if anyone experiences the same problem I would enjoy very much to hear from you. – Candro.

I don’t experience what you’re going through, but if I were you I would definitely get help for your anxiety, because that’s contributing to the paranoia and staying in the house all the time and not having a life, which is not normal or healthy.

Having said that, if you keep up what you’re doing regarding your sleep patterns, you are going to create a huge, huge problem for yourself down the road when you can no longer sleep when you want to or really need to. That’s what this forum is for – those of us who are suffering from insomnia, which is really miserable and hard to overcome. So focus on good sleep hygiene as well as healing your anxiety, if you don’t want to find yourself in even more trouble down the road. Take care.

Welcome to the forum, Cando. My suggestion would be to talk to a doctor — particularly since you have some history associated with psychosis. You may also want to talk to a sleep physician about your sleep, too.
