Hi everyone. For 4 nights now I have completely cut out 5 HTP, Melatonin & Valarian Root which I have been completely dependant on for over a year. These supplements were recommended to me by a homeopath. Before this I was dependant on perscription drugs such a Zopiclone and Trazadone which I had a TERRIBLE time coming off of. Up until these last 4 nights I had been waking every 2-3 hours and my life has been on hold as feeling so exhausted every single day… Just existing, getting through the day. The last 4 nights have been so good, last night I slept from 10.30pm to 4.45am, this is just unheard of for me. I couldn't return to sleep tho at 4.45am as I was so happy, I had a smile on my face lying under my duvet😂. Anyway my theory so far is that the three supplements I have been taking must of been holding me back from deep sleep in someone way. I don't know which one but I don't care. How strange is it that drugs that are supposed to improve your sleep can make it worse. Also last night I was 'under pressure' to achieve sleep as I have a big day today. I hope this gives someone some hope that it can be done. Martin – all your daily sleep tips have kind of given me a comfort blanket feeling and I thank you for that. I will keep you posted folks.Nicky x

Wonderful to hear this, Nicky! Thanks for sharing.

How long did you have sleep issues for before this improvement? I'm sure your story will reassure others that they can sleep naturally, regardless of their sleep history or prior experience.

Hi Martin. It's been years that I always thought of myself as a bad sleeper. I was always thinking that there is something wrong with me, maybe that my body was lacking in something like serotonin or whatever. Anti- depressants unfortunately made my sleep worse and as for the strong sleep aids such as Zopiclone & Trazadone etc, well they just masked the problem and I didn't want to admit it… I just had to take something in the form of a pill. The Sleep Training convinced me of the most important fact – I was not born with insomnia and I can overcome this and I have. Also learnt that it is normal to wake in the night, that is part of our DNA. Anyway, taking tablets (for me) was only reinforcing the thought that I could not overcome the problem myself – I was passing the responsibility.. so I stopped. Increasing my sleep drive is still really important, I must be tired when I get into bed and not sleep in the next morning. Before, I couldnt sleep even if I had absolutely nothing on my mind. The crooks of of it is.. I think I have gained a little more respect for myself by not munching on tablets before bed and if I woke in the night. Also, I would love to know if the 5 htp and Melatonin were preventing me from entering proper deep sleep? If anyone has any thoughts on these so called natural supplements, I would love to hear from you. Also sugar, I had a lot of sugar yesterday and my mind was a little more racy last night than it has been… Any thoughts anyone?
