I recently found out that one of the uses for a herb used in Asian Indian medicine is to help people sleep. The herb is Ashwagandha and I was wondering if anyone has used it and what the results have been in terms of enhancing sleep. After looking at several web sites, I noted that it is not recommended for use with sleeping pills because it may have a sedative effect. On the other hand a 6 month study of Ashwagandha use by older people found it had no effect with regard to sleep. Several users on the web claimed it helped them with sleep. If anyone here has used it, was it effective and what dose did you use. Were there any negative side effects?

Good find! I'll shoot this one out in the next insomniac bulletin to see if anyone else can chime in.

Ashwagandha is known as an adaptogen. It works by regulating the production of cortisol, which can reduce stress. Once again, there’s the assumption that stress is the cause of your insomnia (this isn’t always the case). If stress is an issue for you, though, adaptogens could be worth looking into.

Other herbs include American ginseng, Eleuthero, Jiaogulan, Rhodiola and Schisandra.

I've just read reviews on amazon, sounds promising so I've ordered some (about £6 uk) free postage so worth trying!

            Keep you posted Suzy 🙂

Well I've not noticed an effect yet but to be fair I've only taken it the last few days on a minimum dose (1-3 capsules per day) I am also doing your CBT course too so it will be difficult to gauge it, but after reading some really good reviews for it for improving sleep I am going to continue! I may up my dose too….keep you posed 😉

I tried this herb, in powder, for several nights. Without any success.
