I just wanted to share this as I wonder if anyone else is going through this too.

I have nearly recovered from a 3-week viral chest infection, which is the longest I can ever recall being ill for. It has driven me slightly nuts, but I tried to keep some things in mind rather than getting dispirited about my insomnia treatment (which I’m doing on my own).

I feel I have a much better set of techniques and strategy for handling insomnia following Martin’s advice and this forum, so I don’t feel the same feeling of failure and frustration that I would have had in the past (oh no, I’m back to square one again, I’ll have to change everything as I don’t know why I failed again). I saw small improvements during the time I used CBT-I, so I know that’s what I’ll return to.

I tell myself that when I’m completely better I’d return to CBT-I, and I’d certainly get back to where I got to before, in quite short order. I still felt frustrated sometimes, seeing the days ticking by uselessly, but I tried to keep the goal in mind, rather than the current situation of waiting to get better.

Has anyone else been through something similar to this? How did you deal with looking forward to returning to CBT-I, and did you go straight back to the sleep restriction window you last used, or build up to it in stages again?

Glad to hear you’re feeling better! It’s perfectly fine to take a break from cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques when you are unwell since your priority is rest and recuperation! When you feel ready to do so you can just re-implement all the techniques again and continue onwards!
