Have you ever gotten a song stuck in your head (I think that's called an “ear worm”), and it's stuck there when you're trying to fall asleep, but it is WAY too fast, upbeat, stimulating, whatever, for sleeping mode? I've had this happen and have tried to discover good “Songs in My Head for Falling Asleep,” and then try to stick one of THOSE songs in my head, to sort of block out the other one. “Orinoco Flow” by Enya — something like that. “Change the World” (Clapton). “I'm Only Sleeping” (Beatles Revolver album). “Wild Mountain Honey” (Steve Miller Band). Any other ideas that any of you have used — other than actually listening to a CD?

I never turn the music off at home unless I'm watching a movie or something. If I'm not home, chances are I have my iPod on. My playlists for bedtime are timed to end an hour before I wake up. No, this doesn't keep me awake. If anything, the music in my night time playlists are very specifically chosen for tone and content that helps me sleep better than I do with out it.

So I guess I can't help you with getting rid of music in your head. My music never stops, and I always liked it that way 🙂

It is indeed called an earworm.

I found that I could throw my brain into trying to reproduce an instrumental (to avoid the words which might make my mind active when I was trying to shut it down) piece and thereby drop off sometimes. Loreena McKennitt's Tango to Evora, which only has vocalise in it, was one I remembered thoroughly well enough to use.

I get a song in my head during the day and it just won't quit. Even worse is it forces me to sing along, too – even though I can't sing to save my life.

Not happened to me so much at night, though – thank goodness!

I have songs in my head EVERY night. It keeps me awake. The sleeping pills I'm on don't seem to help. I'm on 2 sleeping pills, ambien cr and silenor. The only thing that those do are keep me asleep once I get to sleep. But getting to sleep is the hard part for me. I don't usually get to sleep till a minimum of 4am. But yeah songs in my head suck. I'm used to it though. I just get back up and go to my computer and compute away till hours later when I get tired enough to lay down and possibly fall asleep.

Looks like we need to invent some pills that kill the songs that play in our heads at night. What do we call them? Karaoke Killers?
