      Hi,

I just signed up and got my email encouraging me to introduce myself so here goes: 🙂

My name is Melissa- I chose Hamster for my forum name because in college ( 20 years ago)I had a hamster- well, actually I had a roommate that had a snake and the snake had a hamster- for dinner – but that snake did not eat that hamster for days and I watched, horrified, as the poor thing had to live in that cage with the , obviously not very hungry yet, snake. Finally I broke and begged my roommate to let me take the terrified animal out and replace it with a frozen mouse- yes- they sell those. He reluctantly agreed but only reluctantly because , I guess, snakes prefer horrified little hamsters to dead frozen mice.

Sooo- I got meself a hamster and , well, let's just say that that hamster had issues~ which really who could blame the little guy considering. And every night this hamster would go nuts and try and escape – just stay up all night and run from corner to corner looking for a way out even though I put a sign in his cage that said ” no snakes allowed”( just kidding). Every night he would run around that cage until morning when he would fall, exhausted, asleep, under his water bottle. It drove my roommates( new ones- the last one was for a Summer rental only) nuts. But I felt for the guy, I really did, because for much of my life I did/ do the same thing- just run around from corner to corner all night looking for a way out- except the corners are in my brain. Chachos- my hamster , may have lived with a snake but I lived/ live with OCD and anxiety and sometimes I think I would prefer a snake.

But besides being like a whacked out crazy hamster I am a pretty normal person. 😀 I am married to a very nice man for almost 17 years now- who could sleep on a bed of nails during a hailstorm of Biblical proportions and snores really loud. You know we love each other if we can make it work with those differences! And I have a super 15 year old daughter. She has a rare genetic syndrome called Rubenstein-Taybi. Though not Down's syndrome it is similar in the way it presents itself. But that is a whole other post- one in which I love to talk about-my daughter, that is, because she is by far the coolest person I have ever met. And, oh, I tend to ramble – a lot. I try to keep posts short, I really do, but something goes awry. But on that note I will read other's long posts with pleasure. That is why my twitter account is sadly lacking. I don't “twitter” well with others. But I forum with the best of 'em. 🙄

So- greetings all. I hope I didn't scare any of you off. 😮 I look forward to getting to know you all.

      Thanks,

      Melissa

Hi Melissa and welcome to Insomnia Land. Thanks for sharing the great story about the hamster – that put a smile on my face!! It's funny, as yesterday I gave someone a ride into town from the supermarket and he was telling me how he had a boa constrictor and would feed it live rabbits.

You sound like a great person and I'm sure you'll fit right in here. Enjoy your stay, and I look forward to getting to know you!

Hi Melissa! I thought I would welcome you since you welcomed me. 🙂 I know how hard it is to live with anxiety, I have GAD. It can get pretty bad at times, especially if I'm exposed to one of my triggers (illness, death, etc.)

          Glad you're here!

Hello Melissa, welcome to the forum. 🙂

How I envy your husband being able to sleep so soundly. Lucky guy!!

The story about the hamster was nice. Poor little thing, being stuck in a cage with a snake. It must have been terrified. I'm glad you rescued it.

We look forward to reading your stories of lack of sleep. Hopefully you will find some of the advice here useful. I've learnt some things I didn't know.

            Nice to meet you. 🙂
