Welcome to Insomnia Land, Naomi.
I have to say, the experience you took away from the sleep clinic is quite common – many of our members felt the same way; I think that sleep studies are probably only beneficial when it comes to diagnosing other sleep conditions such as sleep apnea. When it comes to insomnia, there is little they can do except confirm you can't sleep!!
You're right that people who don't suffer with genuine insomnia simply don't understand what it's like. However, now you've found our small community you no longer have to feel alone – you are among people that know what you're going through.
There are lots of tips already around the forums and on the blog – but please do contribute your own thoughts. Our community can only improve if our members contribute and share their tips and experience.
I look forward to getting to know you, and welcome again.
