Hi my name is Naomi. I have had sleeping problems all my life. I have tried countless medications, techniques, and even underwent a sleep study (which they simply told me at the end “You have difficulty sleeping”. Wow. Thanks for the waste of a couple thousand bucks! Thank god for health insurance!), to try and help me sleep. Nothing has worked. Since I just turned 17, I can't take any of the stronger sleeping medication for adults. I seem to have inherited my insomniac ways from my mother, who also has difficulty sleeping. She was diagnosed with sleep apnea (it is highly probable that I will contract it later) and she now sleeps with the help of a C-PAP machine and Ambien.

When I found this website, and I read the 'About Us' page, I was so excited to see that somebody (besides my mother) actually understood exactly what it means to not sleep. People just say “Just lie there, read a book, and you'll fall asleep when yo're tired!”. But no, it doesn't work like that. I can't fall asleep, even when I am tired. It's like my body is incapable of falling asleep until after about 3 a.m.

Thankfully, my mom home schools me and my 3 siblings, so I can sleep in as long as necessary.

Sorry for my rant, and thanks for creating this wonderful website!

      Naomi

        Welcome to Insomnia Land, Naomi.

I have to say, the experience you took away from the sleep clinic is quite common – many of our members felt the same way; I think that sleep studies are probably only beneficial when it comes to diagnosing other sleep conditions such as sleep apnea. When it comes to insomnia, there is little they can do except confirm you can't sleep!!

You're right that people who don't suffer with genuine insomnia simply don't understand what it's like. However, now you've found our small community you no longer have to feel alone – you are among people that know what you're going through.

There are lots of tips already around the forums and on the blog – but please do contribute your own thoughts. Our community can only improve if our members contribute and share their tips and experience.

I look forward to getting to know you, and welcome again.
