Hello and would like my insomnia to end

      I just joined this forum after having 2021 be my year of insomnia. It started out with talking over the counter sleep medication which started my insomnia to having to take Ambien and other prescription medicine. None of these medications eliminated my insomnia. In June, I tapered off all medications and although my sleep has been getting better I’ve been experiencing issues with falling asleep and it can take sometimes 2 hours to fall asleep.

        The only way for it to end is to not want it to end, sounds twisted? Because if you are desperate to get away from insomnia, it will tend to stick around longer! It is only when you stop seeing insomnia as a huge problem that you start to defuse the heightened alert situation and turn this around.

        Your mindset is the key here. Other than that, the only other thing you can do is just adopt a regular bedtime schedule just like a normal person. Best wishes.

          Hi tennislover, it really does come down to attitude toward insomnia. Suggest check out Martin’s podcast.

          True, it is hard to believe this when we are hammered from not sleeping well night after night. To the extent you can, try not to take thoughts too seriously. I know when I have had a rough patch, I can get thoughts popping into my head like “I’ll never get over this,” my life is ruined”etc. And then I can tend to let those thoughts take over.

          Eventually I remember the huge difference between:

          1. “My life is ruined”; and
          2. “I’m having the thought that my life is ruined”
