Where do I start 3 week ago awesome sleep, out of the blue one restless night that has progressively got worse to the stage I’m lucky to get 2 hours if that, I’m 48 so I know it could be hormone issues as well, also I have anxiety that has spiked over this time severely, just want to know if anyone else in same boat and how they deal with it ty

I’m much younger, but yeah. I have anxiety and insomnia. Lately, I can’t sleep for more than 1-2 hrs at a time and I always wake up out of a vivid dream. When my anxiety is really bad it takes hours to fall asleep and I wake every 20 mins, and those nights are torturous.

Since I acquired the anxiety from poor behaviour patterns, I can try to reverse it that way. I’m just trying to be mindful and calm throughout the day. The problem with this anxiety though, is that I get a new irrational fear every few weeks. Now it is a fear of sleeping and having a weird dream, even though I’ve had them for 2.5 years. This has put me at a low point with my anxiety and even caused depression, but I have no choice but to keep trying.

Have you had insomnia before? And how long have you had the anxiety?

          Hello Chezzy-

Of all the possible symptoms or causes of insomnia

I most have been overlooking at 53 that hormones

are there too. Thanks.  On the other side, I am finding

a good percentage here at this site have anxiety some

where in them.  So being an anxious person my whole

life, and researching anxiety as much as anything else

via the computer since on this site, I don’t think I have

anxiety. I have several conditions, but it appears I am doing

as many to combat it for other reasons. Like SLEEP!

And as I expressed to Sergio I have never had and dreams

at all- let alone vivid or scary.

By the way how much time was this awesome sleep in time

and length?  Trying not to pay attention to time, I think

tonight will be 6th  nights in a row (of sleep)

5 out 5 for this month!  You would not believe what the

month of September was like.  Longest month of my life.

That’s how I came to the site.

Welcome to the forum, Chezzy. Your story sounds very familiar and I am sure many people reading your post can relate.

Chronic insomnia tends to be triggered by a one-off event that leads to poor sleep (or simply by a random night of poor sleep). Bad nights are entirely normal and happen to even the best sleepers. Unfortunately, when we have a bad night of sleep it’s all too easy to then start worrying about our sleep.

This worry immediately makes sleep more difficult and makes it more likely that we will implement compensatory behaviors in a bid to improve our sleep (examples include going to bed earlier, staying in bed later, napping during the day, calling in sick to work, canceling plans, etc).

These compensatory behaviors then combine with the worry we have about sleep and make it even more difficult to sleep. As we continue to struggle with sleep, we then trigger a vicious cycle of ever-increasing worry and anxiety and ever-worse sleep.

Have you looked into any of the techniques that make up a typical course of CBT for insomnia? CBT-I is particularly effective at improving sleep in this situation since it addresses and corrects the thoughts and behaviors that are making sleep difficult.
